Starting Spirit
« on: January 07, 2011, 11:15:54 AM »
The first thing to do is to run some ground lines to rectify the Gottlieb grounding problem. This is really well documented in www.pinrepair.com and the mandatory grounds can be done in a hour. Initially I've just done the mandatory ones, and will do the extended mods and re-pinning of connectors when the playfield is being worked on.

I added a remote battery pack after removing the original Datasentry ni-cad - 28 years and no leak, might keep the battery and send it to Duracell with a suggestion they take a leaf out of that book!

Next was to solve the sound board issue. The fuse serving the sound board would blow on power up, so I replaced the bridge just in case ($3.00 part, and given the age of the originals, just worth the chance it was the issue. No good though, fuse was still blowing.

My electronics knowledge is weak, so it looked like sending this off to the experts. But I noticed a lot of continuity between the pins on the sound board amp, so something was amiss. This part is virtually unobtainable, and there's been a suggested mod to make an on board replacement using a modern amp. This was previously done to another of my system 80 boards, and while it works, it is a little ugly.

Mike (Homepin) had a mention of doing a replacement amp on his website "Coming Soon". So I dropped him a line to see if I could buy one. Mike generously offered to send me one for free to trial for him.

Really neat package arrived earlier this week.

Mike very helpfully includes in his package a replacement cap for the one at cc33 which is working in a 30 volt circuit but the cap Gottlieb uses is rated at 25 volts. This is mentioned in the pinrepair guides, and the other day I had tried to get the proper cap at Jaycar but they didn't have it in stock. So before installing the nice new amp, I replaced that cap.. .. Then it crossed my mind that it was the 30 volt circuit that had the issue, and when I tested the old one out of circuit it was a dead short - and the continuity I'd noticed earlier at the amp was gone. So on a whim I thought I'd try the board with the new cap.. .. And it worked!!

I did have to replace one other chip as the board was making off sounds, but it's working perfectly now.

I've had a chat with Mike, and he's still keen to see this tested, so if anyone out there has the need to give this a try and will post the results here, let me know and I'll mail it to you to try out.

Would just about be the only Spirit I've heard of in YEARS to be in the resto queue. Will be interesting to follow !

Finally solved the sound board issue - two broken traces were robbing 2 of the sound lines - all good now.

And got it in from the garage last Monday and a few members managed to get a couple of games in to boot.

Nick,

I'm sure you are probably already aware of these, but for the last 4 Sys80's I've rebuilt (I know I'm mad), without question I'll upgrade the connectors for the power supply and CPU to DRIVER board from Big Daddy.  Todd is great to deal with and has lots of great Gottlieb parts for PCB's, cables etc..

Thanks Marty, yes, very familiar with Big Daddy - some great stuff especially the ready made inter-connector. Thanks for the reminder though, I do need to place an order and in particular get one of those inter-connectors.

Pleased to hear it was a simple fix, Nick. I have to say that this machine was the "eBay steal of the year". No matter how many great games on offer (Big Bang Bar / ATM etc), I can't resist playing Spirit.
