Man jailed for internet trading fraud

An Adelaide man who used an internet trading site to steal thousands of dollars has been given a four-year prison sentence.
Adam Daniel Hodgetts, 26, used fake names to open bank accounts and list items for sale on the Gumtree website.

He accepted cash for items he never sent any to his customers.

The District Court heard he stole nearly $30,000 and it was unlikely 62 victims would be able to recover their money.

Judge Julie McIntyre said Hodgetts' offending was planned, systematic and sophisticated and he had shown little remorse.

She said he had undermined confidence in commonly-used online transactions and was oblivious to the suffering he had caused.

A two-year non-parole period was backdated to last year, meaning Hodgetts will be eligible to seek parole next June.

I am sure the police take these types of crimes seriously but the conviction is pretty laughable.
2 years and due for parole in June 2012...wow....no wonder so many people roll the dice with the law.

reading comprehension cow, its two years non parole back dated. 15k a year is serious time imo. id prefer to see the victims launch a class action and ruin him by grinding him into bankruptcy or the court making an order for restitution. would be interested to hear from pinsanity if the latter would be possible. with prisons being ay capacity and such awesome places for rehabilatating offenders like this solid citizen im not sure if i want non violent offenders clogging up the system.

  Visited a friend who was locked up for unpaid driving offences and this place had no fences separate rooms with there own bathroom tv foxtel was more like a school camp than prison.

Prison time for unpaid fines is complete lunacy IMO and CANNOT help the "offender" or the community in any form?

Fraud, as in this case, is a different matter, again IMO.

Its most likely the accused was remanded in custody, hence the backdating.

Yes, been in custody since his arrest. Sad part is so much scamming is from overseas, this is only a drop in the ocean, but at least it sends the right signal locally.

Fraud deserves jail time in my opinion, end of story. Otherwise civilised society breaks down. You punch someone out, u get locked up, you break into someones premises, u get locked up, you SCAM or FRAUD someone, you SHOULD get locked up.

Bankruptcy to criminals is a laughing matter. It dissolves any responsibility and payment back then becomes impossible. Bankruptcy still allows people to earn over $40,000 per annum before one cent is taken off them etc. The person sits on the dole, earns cash in hand, works and gets on in life, but leaves families n good people behind stuck in a financial mess. If u dont jail people for fraud, they laugh at Society and do it again and again.

Let them get jailed, locked up like an animal for a few years. See if they decide to come out of jail and do it again. In most cases, probably not. Society and the courts need to get serious if they want to dis-courage people from crime. I like Americas no tolerance system. If anyone thinks jail for white collar crime is not neccessary, let them take $20 or $30 grand out of your account, then watch them get off with a warning and a small fine. You would be very pissed to say the least. Just my opinion.

15K per yr is not justice imo.....it's not even min wage...the sentence is a joke as is the majority of our legal system.
We both know he will be out on parole sooner rather than later and more than likey doing the same shit again.
