Stargate Pinball
« on: October 31, 2011, 05:32:45 PM »
Hi everyone, I am thinking of getting a Stargate pin. I am a big fan of the movie and most videos I have seen on the pin look quite good. Does anyone have one who can give me a honest evaluation.

I have read some damming reports on Gottlieb machines in terms of playability compared to Williams/Bally which I think is unjust at times, or am I missing something.
Please not that I have another Gottlieb machine (Cue Ball Wizard) and Williams (The Getaway) and a couple of Zaccaria machines.

Cheers

I know a local Melbourne person with probably the best ever Stargate I've seen.  From memory it had a NOS playfield put in not that long ago.

Great fun to play and if you like the series / movie then its a worthy machine to get.

I'll send you a PM with his details.

IMO far and away the best Gottlieb DMD game. There are probably a couple of other good games of that era, but as the theme is so good (I loved the movie) it takes the cake.

Extremely good lay out, great shots, great toys (Horus "drop up" targets, Pyramid with glider craft) difficult but satisfying ramp shots, beautiful backglass, nice playfield artwork, great dot animations, reasonably balanced rules.

Sold mine a few months ago and find myself looking at ones for sale and thinking hard about getting another. Only sold it as it was the least played and I am sticking to the number of games I have (if I can!!).

I had never played one until about a month ago - I didnt expect a lot.

I was VERY surprised - the game plays really nicely and I can re-iterate what Pinnies4me has said in some ways as I had limited time on it but I kept going back to it for a few games.
Might have been that sensational back-glass calling me back  *)*

From memory the one I played had a RED DMD display which I am not a fan of - unsure if this is standard - but it wouldn't put me off grabbing one  ^^^

The best of the SYS3 Gottliebs. They don't change hands that often because collectors hold on to this title. It is probably the only SYS3 machine that is constantly desirable. I Think "Freddy : A Nightmare on Elm Street" is a close second, but there's daylight between Freddy and the next best pin.

I think I know the exact machine MartyJ is referring to, and it is the best I've seen  ^^^

Cool thanks guys. I just read another thread on here about Stargate. It seems to get great reviews. I think it is on my hit list. Now to decide what pin to get rid of

Great game, shame the audio really lets it down...it would have been better using the original score from the film and the voice grabs are pretty lame and repetitive. Other than that I find the pin hard to fault, if it was a Wms/Bally pin it would be in the top 10 all day!

What's it worth these days as a matter of interest?

The "Tutorial" voice calls "Up the middle" etc are often criticized. All you need to do is hold both flipper buttons in after pressing the start button, and they are removed, and the audio is in fact one of the best things in this game. Really good music, especially for the "Hurry Up" mode.

A really nice Stargate is worth $2500 all day. Nicks one he just sold was one of the best I have seen around for a while. Hard to find one with a spotless playfield like that. Great game, great art package and the best ever translite with a great light show. Collectors are looking for and keeping nice Gottliebs these days because they are unique.  ^^^
