So your getting into pins or any type of collecting for that matter.
Do you....
(a) buy as many cheap arse titles as possible regardless or quality to aquire a motherload.
(b) buy titles that are widely regarded as great players but will cost more than the average plank.
(C) not give a shit and go to the pub instead.

I dont think there is any such thing as cheap arse titles. All machines (DMD) will cost $1500 to 2 grand upwards straight off the bat. Whether you have one or 100 its not going to be cheap. Also, the belief that some machines that cost say 2 grand are not good pinballs but a machine that cost say 9 grand is a good player, that theory is flawed.
I have played many $2000 machines that I felt were better value than a $9000 title. But there is nothing wrong with spending 9 grand either. Its all personal taste.

Every collector has a desire to collect pins and the specific titles based on a few basic theories, with size of area within a house dictating say 6 or 7 pins versus 100 because of space avail etc. Others collect only Bally/Williams. Other collect all manufacturers, others collect sci-fi themes or car themes etc. Others only buy a few machines because thats all they desire. Others buy many cause they want a larger collection.1 or 50, it dont matter.

When i started collecting, as like many others, I decided to buy machines that I thought were great value or great bang for ya buck titles. An example would be say a Last Action hero for say around $1800. A fun machine at a great price. A Indiana Jones for $4500. A Star Trek Next Gen for $3500. Titles all varying between $1500 and $5000.

I have always said EVERY pinball is fun. There is no such thing as a non fun pinball. Whether you buy one machine or 100 it doesnt matter. What does matter is that you and your family enjoy playing the pinnys, and other people in the wider community also enjoy playing them. Price of a machine and amount of machines doesnt matter cause once u hit the start button, its all fun.

I have bought machines that appeal to me

I have ‘A’ list titles, ‘B’ listers, DMD, solid state, and EMs
Some I paid to much for, some I bought for a bargain
But I love them all

Any one who asks me about getting into the hobby get the same answer, ‘Go out and play as many machines as you can, then you can decide how to send your money’

I think that starting out it is worthwhile owning two or three machines. Unless you are prepared to spend mucho dollars for repairs, then you need to be able to still play when one of them breaks down and you work out how to fix it.

So based on that I reckon that you are better off owning some cheaper machines to begin with unless you are really sold on owning a so called A list titles.

(a) buy as many cheap arse titles as possible regardless or quality to aquire a motherload.

Buy cheap to ascertain that you LIKE the hobby and that you can justify spending the money on a collection that will grow. Be prepared to buy and sell to find the machines you like, then work towards "A" list titles. Once you have your three or four games - including your "Holy Grail", then you have achieved your goal..

It also depends what an "A list" game is.. Some say "Cactus Canyon" or "Medieval Madness". Thats some serious coin for two games that in my opinion, are "B list" at best. So it is a personal appraisal - my "A list" is Fathom and Paragon. For others, it may be Minstrel Man and Mermaid.

I really think that as long as you KNOW the hobby is something you can devote time to and enjoy, then it will take time to find the Holy Grail "A" list machines - whatever genre.

If you don't have much space buy top players. If you have plenty of space buy the cheapies so you have plenty of variety

What Cavey said   ^^^

Start off with cheap pin's, get a feel for the hobby.. if you like pinball (who does'nt) work your way to titles that you want,  *)*

Space to have them set up is my biggest issue,  20+ pins take up some room   :D
