Attrct mode issue with Gorgar
« on: March 16, 2012, 07:19:32 PM »
Hi all.

I recently bought a Gorgar and to cut a very long story short, it plays fine, but locks up in attract mode.  The displays go blank and the lights stop flashing.  This machine has caused me a lot of mental pain!  :)

Any ideas?

Im not familiar with the machine but attract mode is controlled by the CPU.
We can get some clues as to what's going on here.

Gorgar has sound, so im assuming that it has some Dip Switch settings on the MPU that allow " attract with sound" .. " attract without sound"  etc. Try changing this setting and see if it makes any difference......

Also, does the game function properly when performing all the self tests?

Are you 100% positive that it works properly when playing?

Hi.  Thanks for your reply!!  I don't know if it has an attract with sound switch/setting.  I have tried to find it through the manual with no luck.  I have not put it through the self test lately.  I have been playing it quite a lot and cant see any problems with its gameplay.  Everything seems to work fine.

If I start the machine and leave it in attract mode, it runs for sometimes 1/2 an hour or so, then it locks up.  The screens go blank and the lights don't flash.  I am no genius, but I think it may be a heat related issue coz once it locks up, it locks up faster after that (if that makes sense).  I was thinking maybe a new game ROM may sort it out?  I paid quite a lot of money fr this machine and it has caused me plenty of frustration, not to mention cost!  It seems to have some gremlins on board!

Cheers

Check interboard connector. The pins can crack and may need reflowing with a soldering iron. Try adding a bit more solder to do this or use solder sucker to remove old solder then reflow or replace the hole lot with new ones. These connectors can cause the resets

Yep - interconnect can cause this issue. Also re-seat the ROMs on the CPU board (with the game off). Sounds like it might be a dry joint on one of the ROM sockets.

Sorted.  I re-soldered the pins on the 40 pin connector.  All good now.  I had my power supply rebuilt by Gary at Amutech.  He is a total legend!!  Great job and a more than fair price on all the other repair he had to do.  Seems those 40 pin connectors are notorious pains in the rear!

Thanks for your replies and advice guys!!
