posting on AP - has something changed?
« on: February 27, 2013, 05:26:21 PM »
I have just noticed in the last few days, if you make a post you are able to edit with about the 1st hour and then the post locks so you can't modify.

Is this a planned change or a possible glitch.

For me it doesn't worry me but sometimes go back to edit to add a image or I post at night and come back in the morning and re-read my post and think - crap my spelling was terrible last night and go in and fix it.

Can a mod confirm a glitch or new thing?

Is this happening to anyone else?

Hi Swinks, this is a general change. Editing is available in the first five minutes, then disables. This was done as recently a former member edited quite a number of posts by deleting their content, and to avoid issues in future like this (wasted a lot of our time cleaning up the mess), the time limit was re-enabled. It was a planned part of the V2 update that is coming soon in any event.

Sorry if this is inconvenient, but sometimes we have to set things up with the lowest common denominator in mind unfortunately.

Any member who wants a post edited, deleted please feel free to PM me or Stangeways the topic link and edited text, we can always make the change. For the most part, a correction in a later post is better anyway as it avoids some inconsistencies where members might correct an earlier post rather than posting the correction.

Swinksy,

Thanks for asking a question I'm sure a few of us were wondering! Makes sense when you understand why.

personally I would allow people to delete their own posts
your way seems to me to be too controlling

Yes, it is sad when a member throws a temper tantrum and does a mass deletion, but it is not a regular occurence and thus does not diminish the site

I was wondering about this myself, as i went to add some pics to a resto thread a couple of days later after i posted recently and found i couldn't, then i realised it must be a change made to the forum software or something like that.

I often used to go back and either correct typo errors i'd made in previous posts, or fix something i'd typed in a resto thread that after re-reading later on i thought didnt make sense or i hadn't explained clearly enough.

Its not a deal breaker for me either  ^^^ i too just need to hit the correct keys or explain what im doing in a resto thread properly the first time!

It is not only "sad", but it creates a massive problem from the admin side of things as we have to clean up the mess, and then modify every single post where comments were deleted, but quoted. It is not "controlling" at all, as you can "preview" each post before hitting the "post" button, and you have 5 minutes to change it again, if need be. So there are two opportunities to correct a post within the 5 minutes. We would have preferred NOT to make this change, but the pros outweigh the cons. It is a global change that affects all members.

As Nick suggested, if someone needs something changed - PM either of us.  ^^^
