DE Starwars.....Gremlins are Back
« on: April 07, 2013, 09:00:09 PM »
Hi guys,

Tonight I swapped a broken plastic over on the playfield which involved un-soldering and re-soldering a flasher globe holder. The game was fine before hand but afterwards I noticed that in test this flasher didn't work. I then turned the machine off and made sure that I hadn't soldered the wires back on the wrong way. I hadn't, but when I turned the machine back on the none of the flashers worked and in test mode the light flasher test fired the coils instead.   !@#  Also Tried a game and the coil which kicks/loads the ball  ready to fire up the out lane does nothing.

I'm hoping its just a fuse and ill test them tomorrow but the coils firing during the light flasher test is a bit weird I think. Anyone seen this or similar before?

I've had this game a little over a year and I'll never get rid of it for sentimental reasons, it was my favourite game back when it was new and sited at my local arcade but its had its share of odd issues from time to time.

I assume you are referring to the 89 flashers ?

It they are the two flashers near the playfield runner - where the playfield slides in and out - you may find the tab on the 89 socket holder has shorted to ground on the runner. VERY easy to do. Just check the tabs on the globe holders CANNOT touch the runner when the playfield is lowered.

Yes - you would have blown a fuse. You may have blown two if the relay is not switching between the flashers and the coils.

I thought you'd have a laugh when you saw this Blair. As you know there's never a problem with this machine unless you touch it or look at it for that matter. No but really, it's been excellent for the last 6 months so it was due.

The globe holder is the 89 under the exploding x wing plastic. I'm not sure what I may have shorted it out on though. I'll check and change the fuses tomorrow and see what happens.

New plastic in

Is there anything that it could have touched or be touching underneath the playfield?

I think you should edit your last post to "there's never a problem unless I touch it.". ;-)

Good point! I do have the knack  !@)

The solder could be touching a post. I'm not sure but that's about all it could be I think. I'll check tomorrow.

Yep, holder was touching a post.

You were spot on Nino, two fuses blown. 5a and a 8a. Can't find a spare 8a so it's off to Jaycar tomorrow.

Jaycar are getting some 8a fuses in. In the meantime I have 7.5a and 10a at home, are either suitable short term?

7.5a would be ok, dont over fuse though, i.e. Dont use the 10a fuse.  Do you want me to see if i have some 8a?

Thanks, ill try the 7.5a. It'll only be a few days before the 8a come in so thanks for the offer but I'm in no rush, I just want to make sure the problems solved.
