D E Sound issue
« on: September 25, 2014, 10:53:33 PM »
just baught a Maverick and its set to free play (if that makes a differance) every now and then the sound drops out. doesnt seem to be anything that trigers it, it just goes dead and sometimes comes back when the ball drains and next player kicks in. Any ideas?

Check obvious connection to the speaker. I had a wire connection that looked ok but then found the lug actually was broken off on the bass speaker and would touch every now and then. Else see if all plugs to sound board ok

Thanks Rob, I think its a bit more seriouse than that. All speaker wires are soldered ant the sound will either totally dissapear or go off half way through the steam boat horn

The bridge rectifier on the sound board is often the culprit and very cheap and easy to replace.

Also check connectors to the speakers. From memory, these use the same sound board as the REV3 DE machines. If the speakers on the speaker panel and lower cabinet speaker are cutting out then I suspect the Sound ROMs need to be reseated - and if the sound PAL chips are socketed - reseat them as well.

Another thing you could check, although not highly likely, is that the mounting screws on the sound board are all done up nice and snug.  This can cause a grounding issue on Wms machines if they are loose, not sure about DE though.

Thanks guys, reseated ROMs and seems fine so far. All connectors were fine and mounting screws as well. To busy to play it much today. But I'll give it a fair bash tonight.

OK . sound issue is still there. Can I get the bridge rectifier from great plains? If so what is the part number? I am doing an order so it wouldn't hurt to add it. I have to try something.

These sound boards don't have a BR that I can recall.

You need to check the connectors and resolder the board connectors.

They have three separate amplifiers - unusual that all three would be defective which leads to the PAL chips which can be replaced but only with the proper desoldering station as these are fickle boards to repair. The fact that the IC reseating solved the problem leads me to think it could be the ROM Sockets.

Try reseating one at a time to see if you can narrow it down to one particular IC or socket. ROMs can be re programmed - but I still think it could be as simple as the power connector on the board - resolder to be sure.

My bad - the bridge rectifier on the *power * board I mean.  When this is faulty there can be missing sounds. This is a standard 35 amp 200 volt  unit you can get at jaycar etc. The jaycar ones are 400 volt which is fine.
