Cold or Hot?
« on: August 09, 2009, 11:31:02 AM »
Looking at my T2 again after reading and viewing youtubes of freeze spray techs on mylar removal, I'm leaning towards giving the COLD option a try. It looks real easy on the videos but is it?

I have studied the mylar on my machine and there's lots of spots where its lifting and screaming to be removed. I even removed a sling mylar piece by just ripping it off  ^&^ WHAT I hear you say....don't panic, it was stuck on top of the major mylar piece. Came of real easy.

However, I am still uncertain whether to go Hot or Hot and Goo Gone or Freeze spray. I'm leaning towards freeze thinking it may minimized lifting insert decals (re: MartyJ case) but would like comments on whether this theory is correct.

Has anyone tried the freeze method with or without success on a Diamond plate? Otherwise I'd probably go the hairdryer/goo gone squirt method to kill two birds with one stone (mylar off at the same time glue removal).

BTW it looks like I have factory mylar on the machine and no playfield wear whatsoever. I do have a slightly lifted insert with mylar over it. Do you suggest fixing this before mylar removal or after?

Can you post a couple of pics of the area's of concern?

In theory if your diamond plate is all in good shape, the mylar should not take anything off at all (with heat method).

Can do Marty, just gotta work out the best way to photograph it, but will give it a good try.

I forget whether you solved the insert decal problem you had with the 250K etc that had some art work on the original but the aftermarket only had the numbers? Also the teeth. I want to be prepared before the problem arises and not after.

Nice hearing from ya

Have gone ahead and knocked down the insert so the pix show the insert in place now.
The shots basically show any lifting and discolouration etc etc. Also one shot is of a sling mylar on top of th ePF mylar. Any thoughts appreciated

Hmm tough call.  By looking at those photos, the mylar is shagged but the diamond plate still looks OK.  That looks no different to where I started and I don't think I lifted anything.

Worst case - the insert decals are available - although the 250,000 one takes a bit of tweaking.  If the mylar is in bits (ie not one big sheet) I would go the hairdryer / goo remover nice and slow and I reckon it should be fine.  If no diamond plate I would be treading carefully.

Worst thing would be to rip into it.  Nino's done lots of mylar removal so he is the King for advice in that area.
