AskJacob's Stern Magic

Slow and Steady on this one - trying to contain the cost of the hobby, so this has been a slow burn!

Bought quite a few months ago, with no MPU, PDB or Sound boards. Did have the transformer (and a terribly butchered rectifier board - but then again, every non-restored bally/stern has had their rectifier boards in dire need of repair) as well as the displays and wiring looms (except for the mpu-sound board wiring).

I have gathered the boards, and am in the final stages or repairing an old corroded MPU, so as a diversion I have started tacking the playfield which is so far untouched other than removing the plastics.

Found that the right sling had been cracked, and repaired with a chunk of grey aussiduct and epoxy!

All these pics were taken in patented "swirl-O-cam" - a special process that makes the playfield look 10 times worse than the naked eye (low light and a 6 second exposure!) - and a huge depth of field to get those "coffee table book" pictures...

Shoot again - centre above the flippers

Pop Bumpers - oh, and do I spy a piece of a cable tie?

Left targets and Spinner:

MAG inserts above the rollover lanes:

Damn snakes...

Nudie butterfly girl:

Angry Serpent

Skull = death at the right outlane:

Overall View of the centre of the playfield:

And here is the worst the playfield has - some minor planking:

I had the camera out to document the post layout prior to stripping, and though I'd have some fun!

Cheers
Jacob

That's what I'm hoping!

Had no playfield glass on it for years... I'm hoping the dirt has preserved the wonderful colours on this playfield!

A few more pics for today...

Here is the rebuilt rectifier pcb. A tip here is if you use the 35A bridges, you can replace them on the right side (the back) if you use longer standoffs for the PCB. The original bolts still reach through to the metal plate (just!) - and yes, I am missing one bolt here (and the fibre washers)...

Here is a little suprise, a burnt knocker. Luckily I have a rebuilt PDB so I won't have to figure out why :)

Here is a nice surprise - this has to be the cleanest under-side of a playfield I have EVER seen! what a contrast to the top side!

I mean look at this lamp socket - all my other pins are much more crappy looking - this is like new!

And just a fine coat of white corrosion here:

Not even filthy fingerprints anywhere  :lol

Cheers

Yes, the underside of that playfield is unbelievably clean!!

Hard to imagine it is the same playfield.

are you sure its the same playfield. I'd expect the opposite in most cases like this.

Love the camera work !

Looks to me like the layer of dirt has protected the playfield - So I'm hoping it will be SUPER vibrant. Good start - I look forward to your updates
