Scared Stiff - Kickback?
« on: August 12, 2009, 01:14:54 PM »
Hey all - just curious.

Does anyone know if SS was originally planned to have a kickback at the left drain ( where The Spell gets lit )

It would appear the game was ‘ready’ for one, the apron has a hole in it in that spot , and the game would really suit it.

Anyone know if this was planned and then left out?

My guess would be "No", as there needs to be a metal ball guide, and the outlane switch has to be closer to the Apron.

I'd say that Williams simply had a surplus of aprons with the hole already present.

Yeah I knew there was no metal runner - but thought how easy would it have been to put one there in place of The Spell  *!@ .
Would have been a good feature to add to a bloody good game  *)*

Simple answer is YES. You can see the obvious cut in the apron arch where the plunger was to protrude for the kickback. Williams did a "cost save" and opted for a re-serve from the trough instead when "The Spell is Cast".
This was one of several deletions from this magical game. I think Robert Winter's site goes into detail about all these things and more on SS. Yeah, someone did do a kickback mod but it DOES confuse the software. I can't remeber which site it was on either.

So when the second ball is served, you have "multiball".

Lose one ball and you have confused the game. So it is not really multiball without the software - which is missing from the final code.

Yeah, if you are going to all that trouble then I am sure there would be a way to add to the circuit board some sort of latching circuitry so the software didn't get confused.
