Fathom or Medusa
« on: December 21, 2009, 07:47:07 PM »
I will be on the lookout for another machine after the christmas period.The missus has given the all clear to buy another 2.Just looking around at the moment and would like some feedback in regards to Fathom and Medusa.I like both but that display on the playfield is a put off for me in regards to Medusa.Nothing locked in yet as i may change my mind and buy another EM first.Any help would be great.Cheers Tony.

Cant go wrong with either Tony.

Might be a bit of a hunt for you though.  Pretty sure Nino had to import his.

I can't really help, but both of these titles are on my ever growing list also. Never played either, tough choice i don't know what one i'd grab, probably the one that's most challenging i guess.

I'd go a Fathom.  Repro playfields & plastics may still be available.

I have both machines, and it is hard to split them sometimes. VERY hard to find either title, and even harder to find a machine in great condition. Here's a rundown;

Fathom - I had to import mine, and I paid a fair bit for it, even though it was a project. I now have THREE Fathoms! I have a repro playfield and two plastics sets. It will be a full restoration. Chances of finding one is very slim, and dealers that would have them would be asking around the $4200 - $4800 mark for a GOOD ONE. In terms of playability - This is an awesome machine. It is the complete package as the game looks great, plays great and will keep its value well after other machines have been moved on. The ultimate Bally

Medusa - Again - I had to import mine (through MarkC). There will be a repro playfield, and I already have the plastics set. This machine was REALLY nice when I got it and I have not seen one better. Bit cheaper than a Fathom, expect to pay around $2200 - $2800. I've seen them sold for $3500. This is a more challenging game than Fathom - a lot harder and faster. No multiball. Like fathom - Several targets and the display in the center of the playfield it a timer for "extended time" and "bonus matching" - hard to explain, but the game sets a "goal" for you via the display and you need to hit the corresponding targets. Very unforgiving machine. Some would say it is the hardest of all Bally SS.

If "money is no object" - Fathom. Medusa will be very hard to track down. Fathom is the better machine - but only just !

Thanks for the replies everyone,and Strangeways for the rundown on both machines.Unless it has been sold recently i think i can purchase a Medusa for around the same money as i paid for Paragon,and in the same condition.I do not like rushing into a purchase as i want to be sure it is what i want.I was sure with my other buys and could not resist the Paragon as it was on top of my wish list.I have a couple of weeks to think about it ,and then i will chase whatever i decide on.I guess that means not much sleep as i think SS,EM,SS,EM,SS,EM,shit i might use up the few brain cells i have left  ^&^.
