Playboy Pinball
« on: April 11, 2010, 11:17:22 AM »
Hi all,

I have finally got myself a Bally playboy to restore. It has a few issues & i would appreciate any feedback.
First of all i have some problems with player 3 display. The 6 digits light up but looks like 6 backward C's & score does not change during game play. Secondly, Player 4 has the 100,000 digit missing. (Player 1 & 2 displays are working fine).

The Back Glass has leopard spot bubbles where the paint has lifted off the glass. NOTE: when you push bubble onto glass it looks fine. Can anything be done to rectify this?
Finally Cabinet extremely faded so will need a paint job, does anyone know where i could get this done and approximate cost? Or will i have to buy stencils & do it myself?
Cheers Paul

The displays need to be overhauled with a bunch of new resistors and possibly a decoder chip.

Read about them here

You could fix the backglass by spraying a coat of triple thick, and while it is wet cover it with glad wrap which will hold the ink down.  Remove the glad wrap the following day and hit it again with the triple thick.

Thanks for the info Rod,
Can you buy replacement display & display Boards for this machine?
Have you done the glass repair you are referring to before?

There are a couple of options to replace displays.  But none are as cost effective as overhauling the existing ones if the display glass is in decent shape and the segments aren't burnt to buggery.

I'd suggest contacting Aussie Pinball member "Skybeaux" who is up on the central coast.  His board work is second to none, as is his customer service.

As for the backglass.  I've only read about the technique.  It's the only way I am aware of that will fix the dreaded Bally Leopard spots.

The bally displays are very simple.  Companies like Big Daddy enterprises and GPE sell display kits with everything you need.  Buy yourself a soldering iron and a solder sucker and you will be good to go ^^^

Have you tried swapping around Player 1 & 2 displays with Player 3 & 4 . If the problem stays with the display it is the display that is faulty . If the problems stay in the same location it is likely a problem on the main power board .

If you're not feeling confident with doing the repairs yourself then I can also highly recommend sending/taking them to Ken (Skybeaux) .

I have the soldering iron but i think it is two heavy for fine work. I will buy a solder sucker when i get a chance.

I have not found anywhere in OZ that sells triple thick my cans i got from the US a few years ago i have experimented with White knight Crystal clear from bunnings which is what ive used on Star trek and a few other backglasses with good results but cant guarantee the long term.

If any one has any idea how i can quickly test the quality of this product ill dig out a spare backglass and test it.  Maybe heat it up near the heater then cool it down a few times????

 No worries mate,
It would be good to find out if others were interested in purchasing the tripple thick & we got an order together &
 bought a bulk lot in.
