I probably did the wrong thing but it worked.......
« on: November 02, 2010, 12:00:50 AM »
My favourite machine (SF-2) has never played real fast, I thought it was just how it was. Compared to my "Fish Tales" and "Austin Powers" it was more (for me) fun to play but really slow, no quicker than my old "Hot Hand". One issue was on each side of the machine are holes where the ball is fired up (it appears most gottlieb DMD's have these in the same spot) the ball would not come out real quick and sometimes just roll straight out between the flippers no matter what. I rebuilt both these solenoids/coils and it made no difference....Anyway after shining up the paintwork on a motorbike with food grade aerosol silicon oil spray I decided I'd squirt  some on the playfield and a little bit on the shafts that push the balls up. WHAT a difference!!!!...now the thing is playing like a cut cat and my average game scores have gone from 1 million to around 3 million a game, the balls fly out the holes, the bounce all round the playfield and the game is 100% more fun to play.

When I got this "cleaned and shopped" machine it was filthy and I spent a whole day with nifti, rags then millwax on the playfield...it made a huge difference but the spay silicon has just made it so much better again.....Im really hoping nobodys going to tell me it was a dumb thing to do and in a few weeks the playfield will peel off.

Never tried silicon spray douggie but the only issue I could think of is any touch up in the future silicone will stop any new. Paint sticking evenly but should
Make any dirt easy to wipe off .

As Daniel said:  Yeah it's brilliant - provided you don't want to touch up the playfield in the future...

Watch the plastics and stuff - extra velocity equals more breakage...

The rule of thumb seems to be if it's safe on automotive paint - it should be okay on a pinny?

Why is it called PMS?
Because "Mad Cow Disease" was already taken...

Key word there was "millwax" - I hate that stuff, and I would not put it near a playfield.

My SFII was lightning fast. It should leave FT and AF for dead. Pinheads can critisize SFII for it's theme etc, but the game ROCKS - because it is FAST and has plenty of good shots.

If those two outholes are headed straight for the middle of your flippers - then the game ain't level, or the two metal guides where the ball hits need to be adjusted a fraction to angle the ball to either flipper. Those two outholes should be firsing the ball out very quick. Maybe look at changing the coil sleeves ?

Silicon spray - Might play well for a while and then as the crap builds up, it will play far worse.

Sounds like the machine needs to be properly shopped or reconditioned throughout. Get some Shellite to clean the crap off the playfield, Novus 3 and Novus 2 to clean it properly and then paste wax to finish off. You will never go back !

I'm with Nino on this one.  Stuff like silicon spray will be a quick fix but as dirt and crap sticks to it, it will slow down again and then become a pain to clean.  I have always been told that machines don't need any lubrication.  As Nino suggested, change coil sleeves and clean the whole assembly, I'd say there is a good chance the plunger will have crud on it which will reduce it's power.
