Gumtree - is it suspect ????
« on: January 19, 2012, 12:40:19 PM »
Hi guys

Just wondering what your thoughts / experiences are as I thought I would list my WH20 in Gumtree yesterday.

Good thing is I have had 4 bites, 3 women and 1 guy. 2 women want to pay with paypal machine unseen today with one really wanting it, wanting to pay $250 more.

Is it just me or do I smell a weird rat - just sounds too good to be true.

Has anyone everyone listed on gumtree and got weird offers........................

Gumtree scams - especially where they offer to pay more - or where they are 'working on' [insert any remote place here] and can't contact you easily and someone else will collect the goods are RIFE!

Do a Google 'gumtree scams' and you will be amazed.

I wouldn't even respond to anyone who can't personally turn up to view and pay CASH - folding notes - otherwise I would be very rude to them!

Remember the old adage: "If it seems too good to be true - then it is!"

Gumtree is owned by that wonderful monopoly Ebay, the other home of scams.

I challeneged one of the "suspect scammers" and they were in UK, so why would you buy something unseen and no questions, want your paypal account supper urgently and then have a international freight company rock on up to your house - BIG SMELLY RAT.

Called paypal and they said it was a scam at the moment where somehow they come up with a dodgy paypal account, request a invoice and then they pull out and somehow you are slogged with fees incured, your not paid and machine still sitting at home very very dodgy.

DO NOT USE GUMTREE - ad pulled off

here is a sample of a usa one-

I even had some text messages from foreign numbers that just said 'Is your item still available' when I had some arcade cabs for sale. I just ignored them, if you cant come here with some folding, I'm not even replyin to their messages.

I never have any problems. I get a lot of missed calls but the serious people then ring back a few hours later. If they ring you listen and chat about it. If you get an email don't feel too lucky. One thing that shouldn't happen often is people contacting you from interstate nevermind overseas. I like it because it's free and there is no real classifieds in the local papers in my state so this helps it out and I get more serious responses and the site is supposed to split you up into groups/regions so that local people see your add first!

Cash is safer than PayPal because it's physical and harder for them to rip you off unless they come back and rob your house or somthing.
Never pay through PayPal as a gift because it's not refundable!

Gumtree is a good resource, for either buying or selling, geared to local cash deals

Ebay, as much as people hate it has the biggest advetrising/buyer market

If the pin didnt sell on eBay, AP, it aint going to sell on GT  %$%
