Funhouse trips the safety switch on startup.
« on: November 10, 2012, 09:50:49 PM »
Hi,

My Funhouse has been tripping the safety switch when I try to turn it on...it doesn't do it everytime. When I turn the safety switch back on sometimes it trips again but usually it turns back on and Funhouse starts up without any error messages. No other issues at all...any help would be appreciated.

Thanks  !@#

Maybe the MOV across the mains or the filter - both inside the metal box where the mains switch is - they would be my first things to change

I'll bet the mains fuse on the game is over rated. Is this a recent purchase ?

No, I've had it for about six months but it's always done it.

+2, More than likely the line filter. These often do short out and trip safety switches/circuit breakers. I've replaced a few over the years, and i've seen a few machines that have had the line filter disconnected and/or removed.

What should it be, I'll check it?

I fitted a new line filter but it still trips the switch. I'm going to order a thermistor which may fix the issue.

The themistor is IN SERIES with the mains and is VERY unlikely to be causing a tripping breaker.

The MOV is DIRECTLY across the mains and is VERY likely to be causing the problem.

I had a game that did this and it was the game switch that was damaged internally.

When you say safety switch do you mean a circuit breaker or the RCD(safety switch). If its a rcd you will have a slight short to earth somewere prob the switch or incoming cable or plug.

I mean the single circuit breaker, not the main house safety switch

I've ordered both parts just in case although the thermistor limits the surge of current when I switch it on which sounds more like the issue I'm experiencing.
The MOV protects from power spikes and surges.
I've also lost some illumination in the lower playfield...I hope I haven't damaged the bridge rectifier or capacitor !@#

Maybe that is what their job is BUT Thermistors almost always go high or open circuit and MOVs almost always go low resistance or short circuit.

It's a good idea to replace them both anyway.

How manyGPOs operate off this circuit breaker? What else is plugged into this circuit? Any fridges etc? Maybe a faulty breaker?

Replaced the thermistor and vermistor and it's all fixed except for the lower playfield not illuminating...
