Pinball Magic playfield swap and resto
« on: February 24, 2013, 02:00:02 AM »
Just thought I'd throw up a few pics of my Pinball Magic that I just finished a playfield swap and resto on.
Sorry for no before pics but take my word for it, it was a bit of a pig.

Some credit must go to Pinprick for the cabinet art and bodywork.

For anyone who is wondering, swapping out a playfield is awesome!
I couldn't be happier with the results.

I love these types of pics as you can really see how glassy the clear coat is.
Ooooooo.....  shiney.

I had to have the wire forms replated. Turns out gold plating doesn't actually cost that much.

The art around the flipper buttons was too far gone so I got Pinprick to install these Stern rails.
He had to reroute the holes as the Stern rail holes were too low.
Some may criticize this decision but I think it looks really good.

I like the red protectors a lot. I wish they made them in purple.

Who is that mysterious man?

Next up is White Water.

Wow, that looks brilliant! Got me motivated to start my swap!!

Is the playfield the original now cleared, or a cleared NOS? Looks sensational!  ^^^

Great work, well done! There's an awful lot to swap on a pinball magic but well worth it by the looks of yours, that playfield really pops with the clear coat.

Very nice, would love to have one but I think I would have to get rid of my ToM. I think PM is a better game although I only played a dozen games but believe having both titles would be overkill. I'd like to have that problem though.
Still loving my Metallica Premium

The playfield is a cleared NOS.
I ruined the original playfield trying to remove the full playfield mylar  ^.^
Fortunately there is still a few NOS ones getting about and I found another one in the US.
The guy sold it to me for a good price and packed it extremely well. Very good experience all round.
I really took my time with the swap as I was quite worried about stuffing it up.
I have a lot more confidence now and I'm ready to bring on the next playfield swap/resto.
My best advice if you are doing a Pin Magic machine is don't use all the new plastics from the various sellers.
If the new plastic looks different from the original, don't use it, clean up the original, PM for details.

I forgot to thank oldskool69 for his help with the harness and getting the playfield in and out. Thanks mate  :D

It does look terrific, I have just got back my NOS cleared by Eltimbo, but just picked up a JP that I think going to jump the queue, will save PM swap for the middle of winter I think, keen to see mine looking as sweet as yours though!!

What did Pinprick do to get the cabinet art looking so good?

Looks good mate ,great job.I might get some of the siderails made up without the button holes for future projects, that way rather than modifying cabs we will just need to add holes and powder coat

mmmmmmmm shiny
looks even better in real life  ^^^
the gold metal guide rails really finish it off and attention to the minutest detail is AWESOME
when you are ready to do another play field I will surely help again  DESTRUCTO !
it was a pleasure to play such a small part in this- just need a game  &&

What did Pinprick do to get the cabinet art looking so good?

The art was quite good to start with really, it mostly needed a good clean.
Pinprick has a PM too and had sourced the correct colour matches awhile ago.
He's our art guy for PPRC and just did his usual work.
There were some chips out of the backbox that got bogged and painted, a few touch ups that needed doing and he bombed the inside too.
