Removing side rails
« on: March 22, 2009, 12:25:03 PM »
Please excuse my n00biness, I bought a set of new side rails yesterday for my TZ machine but I cannot figure out how to remove the old rails. There is a nut and bolt at the front of the machine which I have removed, but how is the rail attached up near the headbox?  !@# And should the new side rails have some sort of adhesive strip or are they only attached to the cabinet using bolts?  !@#

Cheers,
Matthew

Matthew,

There should be the same (nut and bolt) at the top end but you may have to tilt the backbox forward to get to it.  There is not always one there.

The rails are then stuck on with double sided tape.  I got my last lot (well the missus did) at spotlight (I refused to go in!)..

Use a heat gun or hair dryer to gently heat then with a scraper or similar under the rail gently pry it away....Take it slowly as can remove paint or decal...

Siderails for TZ are removed by removing the bolt at the front and then heating up the rail with a hair dryer and GENTLY prizing it free with a metal spatula or paint scraper. Be VERY gentle.

I used this method on an Adams Gold once - Took around an hour - So take your time

Thanks for the responses guys, I didn't realise it would be so difficult to remove the side rails. I thought they were just bolted on, luckily I asked first or I could have done some real damage trying to pry them loose. Since the new side rails didn't come with the adhesive, will any double sided tape do or is a particular type of tape required?  !@#

Matthew

On the ones I did on my T2, I just used this thin semi-transparent double sided tape.  It worked OK but not 100% happy with it.  IT was just the regular stuff from spotlight.  I just pulled the ones off my Getaway and it was this wide black heavy duty looking stuff. I will be interested too see what others say.

I was thinking of getting some automotive double sided tape...-

I have tryed a few different tapes for this job and i have found the 20-25mm wide tape to be the best in has a 2 or 3mm black foam backing on it. Pretty much the same stuff i have seen under side rails i have removed myself from machines in the past.
