Capcom Flipper Football (Perth)
« on: March 23, 2009, 11:58:02 PM »
Another reasonably rare one, I imagine (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Pinball-machine_W0QQitemZ160323453875QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_15?hash=item160323453875&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318). I notice that pinnies4me has one (any decent photos?). The more I get into this hobby the more I realise there is such a wide variety of machines; this one looks to be a bit different not just playfield wise but in allowing 6 players, and with its timed game.

I like the seller's optimism: "pin ball machines are priced at about $6,000 usually if they are in good condition like this one".

Fun game, it has its place but is not a game for a small collection though. Scoring is just goals, so the switches and drops etc around the playfield control the graphics rather than goals. In adult mode it swears like no other, including the "F" word, which is pretty funny especially in a group of dudes after a few sherbets! Few other games encourage you to burn the goalie, and it's fun watching the referee get beaten up as the game progresses. I bought it not working for spares for BBB, but got it going for fun, and ended up not minding it at all. My mother (almost 80 years young) loved it when i had it finished, so when space ran short and I wanted to store it, she volunteered her spare room where it gets played by her almost every day. Novices can get a lot out of it because the games are timed (loosing a ball is a goal for the other side) so they can get a full game even if pretty weak at playing. I still recall how proud mum was after a couple of weeks when she got to the point of beating the machine more often than not!

The graphics are amazing, without doubt the best DMD there is. The DMD itself is much larger than normal, and the dots much smaller, so the resolution is much higher, and used to very good effect. Because it is at the back of the playfield under the glass (as copied by Circus Voltaire) you get to see the display during the game so those awesome graphics don't go to waste. It plays pretty fast too when cleaned and polished, the outer loop shots coming back very quickly.

It wasn't a success for Capcom, and probably was the last nail for the pinball division, which otherwise would have produced BBB, so has an interesting place in history too.

It does sound interesting, but when you say that it is not for a small collection I understand what you mean!

I am guessing the large high-res DMD would put a few people off as it sounds real expensive to replace.

How long do the games last? I suppose it wasn't a success because real players want the game to last as long as possible with their skill in keeping the ball alive; a timed game negates that. And it sounds like a lot of R&D dollars went into this pin that were never recovered.

By the way, which setting does your mother have the game on??

If you keep scoring goals, time gets extended and games can last a good 20 minutes I'm guessing. I can't recall the settings, but I imagine I set them to factory way back and didn't change them for her - had to make it challenging!

Also, is the profanity setting on or off?

Profanity is on. Although I have never heard her utter the merest of swear words, she is slightly warped (and she'd admit to it too). She loves it when her friend have a try and the game lets rip. She's a funny lady!

Looks like the seller was too optimistic - no-one bit even at an $1800 start? I would have thought it was worth that much?
