I never get the logical difference between leaving the bidding until the last minute or bidding early.

OK, we have three bidders. One is prepared to pay $1800, one $1750, and one $1650. If $1750 is bid early in the piece, the other guy can wait until the last minute to bid his $1800 or he can bid it straight after the $1750 bid. Either way, he is going to pay the same price of $1750 + one increment.

Now let's say they all try to bid in the last minute. The winning bidder will still pay $1750 + one increment as the guy who is prepared to pay $1750 bids it in the last minute.

Now let's say something goes wrong with the $1800 guy's internet connection in the last minute. $1750 guy wins the bidding for $1750, $1800 guy is spewing.

So the only benefit in getting everyone to bid in the last minute is that some might miss out on bidding, and hence it just might go cheaper.

Totally agree with Sinbad. Bid at the end and use a sniping tool like Just Snipe. It's won me an item or 2 over the years that I don't think I would have won if I bidded early. There have been some ridiculous prices for things (not just pinball) all because everyone was too eager to bid early.

With Just Snipe, you can set your max price now but it won't put the bid on until 7 seconds from the end. That way you don't get into any bidding wars and end up paying more than you were originally prepared to pay.

Yeah but some people can't help themselves and get into a bidding war if they bid early. They say to themselves "I'll put another $100 on it" because they really want it. Before you know it the winner pays more than what he wanted to pay in the first place. I'm not saying everyone does this but some do. I sold an Addams Family once for $100 more than the BIN price.

+1 for Sniping tools .. set your price and forget about it till the auction ends, then see if you've won .. the only way I bid on anything these days  %.%

I would have thought it's easier to get in a bidding war right at the death?

Sometimes there is no time left for a bidding war right at the end as everyone puts their bids in at the last minute. If this happens at the start, people have time to take think about it and possibly bid more than they really should.

Heard about that software, used to piss me off when i had the highest bid and seemed to lose out with nano seconds to go, trouble is i'm all mac, there was no software around to do the same thing (haven't looked lately) but again once i'd hit my limit, that was it, learnt the hard way about getting too emotional about ebay bidding.

Used to collect 60's slot cars, they went through a boom a few years ago.. spent way too much on the ebay drug then.

You bid as you wish, but you may just bid yourself out of the race. Many bidders dont have a final price inmind, they are just happy to bid until everyone else stops. They will win of course, but in doing so will price us out of our hobby.
