Widest Wide Body's
« on: March 03, 2014, 10:29:17 PM »
Before I got to far off topic on this thread
http://aussiepinball.com/index.php?topic=12012.msg155251;topicseen#msg155251
I thought I'd ask what the widest wide body's are from different manufactures.
I'm sure Hercules is going to be not only the the widest Atari but also the widest pinball, though the other Atari's appear to have been huge too, just not as big as Hercules.
So what about the Bally's, Gottlieb's, Data East, Sega, Williams and other machines? Were they all created equally and how wide are they really?
I think Roller Disco and Genie were wider than most of the other Gottlieb wide body's, is this as big as they came from Gottlieb?

Hankins had a few wide bodies as well which felt wider than some others I played but it could be an illusion of the art than made some look wider. The lockdown bar is probably the one thing that many companies would go to one or 2 producers to pump these out.

Gottlieb Circus.

Quote from IPDB:
An extended wide-body machine and Gottlieb's first of only two extra wide-body games in their System 80 lineup (the other being Gottlieb's 1980 'Star Race'). The playfield is three inches wider than the rest of the Gottlieb System 80 wide-body series, and the machine also shipped with longer legs; the lockdown bar stands 42.5 inches off the floor.
If you don't remember the 70s then you were on drugs.
If you remember playing pinball in the 70s you were having a good time.
If you don't remember anything,  then read about it here,

Star Race, that's the other one I was trying to think of. I'm sure Roller Disco and Genie are the same size as this extra wide game.

Yes, Circus playfield was very similar to Genie.

To try and create a standard, i consider a widebody to be full width of the headbox.(as listed below)

Other widebodies such as gottlieb etc are technically a 'mid-body' or 'half-widebody', yet still wider than 'normal body'
Sadly everyone still refers to the mid-bodies as widebodies.

So, is a full widebody now mega-wide or something?

Williams/Bally:

Stellar Wars,
Embryon,
Space Invaders.

Atari:
ALL machines.

Widest are the Gottliebs - As indicated - Star Race, Circus, Roller Disco and Genie. Although wide bodies are great fun, they are VERY heavy monsters !

Question - are the 1990's DMD widebodies like

Indianna Jones
Twilight Zone
Star Trek Next Gen
Royal Rumble
Batman Forever

and the list goes on,

are these widebodies wider than previous offerings, or are they the same/smaller/bigger than the older titles listed above ? (forget the Atari machine(s).

I could go out n measure some of my widebodies, but I wondered what other AP members think ??  !@#

A true widebody is as wide as the headbox, anything slimmer than the headbox is a medium or regular body

Those DMD titles are all defiantly narrower than the SS wide body's mentioned.
