Tales from the Crypt - finally got one!
« on: October 10, 2014, 03:16:37 PM »
Just picked this up a couple of weeks ago, been looking for one for ages.
Machine is in really good condition with only a few minor things to fix.
I have got a question for other TFTC owners though, this machine has the green headbox lamp inserts for the topper, has anyone else seen these?
I thought they were only supposed to be in the engineering samples??

Made it real easy to add the lighting to the topper, just run a loom with some flex leds and hey presto.

Here are some pics:

I have a tales from the crypt and its a keeper forever.

My machine was delivered to the USA embassy in China when brand new. It has the oblong cutouts in the headbox for lights but were never added. Haven't ever seen one with green inserts, looks like a modern mod to me. Thought the original factory proto types had clear lenses or just bulbs/flashers poking up.

Nice machine. Well done. Excellent audio and great DMD annimations. Lights and playfield lightshow on this Borg design is sensational.

The inserts dont look like they have been added afterwards, they look exactly like the ones on IPDB

This is what is on IPDB:
"Pictured in the listing is a backbox with five green inserts on the top. There were no lamps or other special lights mounted inside to shine through these inserts. We asked designer John Borg if special lighting was intended and if any of these backboxes made it into production. He replied:

I believe I had some GI and flash in the backbox. It would cast a haze on the big molded topper. Costed out (was eliminated) before production. I had one of the early 30 or so prototypes and don’t remember if my game had these inserts added to the top of the backbox or not. I’m thinking not. [The game pictured] must have been an engineering sample they sold."

I think you are correct Boots.

U scored a good one . What about changing insert colours to red or white etc. Would it be worth while playing around with it.... Either way you have a great machine. Peace from me to you .

Hmmm, it would be a bit of a job removing the inserts and the green haze looks good on the topper.
I am thinking of adding some red leds to the bats eyes, I have seen this mod done on another site and I think it would look good.

no probs Brett

All of the plastics are good including the slings, no breaks at all.

Been thinking about one of them for it and other machines, T2 would look good with it I reckon
