C1 CAP on Data East PPB Board
« on: May 31, 2015, 07:20:54 PM »
Hey all, just after a little advice on the C1 cap on a Data East PPB board.
I hadn't noticed this until I was pulling the board out to see if it had any cold solder joints.
The C1 cap was completely disconnected or looked to have burnt off (you can see the burnt mark on the board).

I soldered it back on and also noticed the F5 fuse had a 10A fuse, so I replaced that as well.

I haven't installed the board back in yet as I was wondering if I should replace the CAP ?
Also what would have caused the CAP to do that in the first place ?
Could it just had been a cold solder joint ?

Probably a loose solder joint and the black mark from arcing?
If you have easy access to another cap just replace it otherwise it might still be ok

Thanks for that boots, I did think it may have been arcing.
I don't have another cap here, but I've been looking around for a cap here is Aus but cant seem to find any.

You will have a tough time trying to locate an "axial" style electro cap - they have been obsolete for donkeys....

Use a conventional "radial" style (both legs the same end) and extend one leg.

It's possible someone like GPE may have NOS ones but I wouldn't use a 20 year old electro personally.

They are worth a try but I wouldn't be so certain about them having this one.
