LW3 blowing fuses when flippers are activated
« on: September 27, 2016, 06:13:06 PM »

Hi all,

My LW3 has decided to take out F5 when the flippers are activated quickly. I have checked the resistance on both coils, ( around 5 ohms) and checked the coil diodes . It has been working for ages until the laser kicker started to play up. It would not occasionally fire. I replaced the coil and mech.I works fine now but now the flippers blow fuses, Bugger!! I have tried the old coil trying to get it back to where it was ......no good. I would really appreciate some guidance as I am chewing through fuses
Cheers... P.S the fuse I am using is a 5 amp slow blow which I believe is right.

F5 on the PPB board or Power Supply ?

F5 on the PPB board is the coil voltage +50V. But the fuse is on the AC side of the BR. That would suggest an issue with the AC Voltage or the BR. I'd remove the PPD board and check for dry solder joints J3, J4 & J7. Check the fuse clip for F5 still has tension.

Thank you for  your reply,
The fuse is f5 on the PPB board. I will pull the board out tonight and have a closer look at the solder joints and BR as per your recommendations. ^^^ I have been focusing under the PF looking for something I may of knocked when I was replacing the kicker..It all seems fine.
Thanks heaps

Also check all the fuses on the PPB board for their correct rating. F7 - F9 are for the coils. If these are over fused, they will create problems.

They didn't start using the 520-5021-05 PPB board until Last Action Hero.
LW3 should have this board, the 520-5021-00 with only fuses F1 thru F6.
F5 is the fuse for the 50V coils.
Those are the flippers, knocker, VUK, Ball Launch and the Laser Kick.
Here is the Tech Chart: http://www.pinballrebel.com/pinball/cards/Tech_Charts/Data_East_Lethal_Weapon_3_Tech_Chart.pdf

Also check the SSFB (Solid State Flipper Board) inside the cabinet on the left side.
It may also have some cracked solder joints.
