Gtb Pop A Card restore
« on: May 21, 2017, 10:19:08 AM »
Now that Card Whiz is gone, time to start on a couple more;

This is another i'm working on along with Lightning that i just started a thread on, Gtb Pop A Card for an older customer from Bowraville.

This is what i found a few weeks ago when i walked out to the carport one morning; dropped off by Prowler, he was expected about 10AM -noon, and i went out about 9AM to open the gate and he'd been and gone! didn't even knock on the front door.. i guess he was in a hurry  :D

Unwrapped for a better look at what i was in for

Backglass is a repro item so no work to be done there!
Lots of delaminating ply though!

Playfield; some paint flaking in a couple of spots and some minor cracking.. not too bad overall, a few dodgey touchups though ::)

This is the worst of the wear

Bottom panel of the cab is stuffed, had a complete layer of the ply missing!

First this i did was to check that the game worked, as it was sold the the customer as fully working.. which luckily it is, just a couple of lamps out

The work begins!! The bottom panel came out with a size ten boot  :lol

Barry the Bodger was here!! These screws were supposed to be holding the small wood pieces that brace the bottom to the side.. they were doing nothing!

Repairs started, starting to glue the delaminating layers of ply.. there was a LOT of lifted ply to deal with on this one!!

Bottom panel replaced with a new piece of marine ply. Strips of Tassie Oak glued in place to replace the missing pieces of ply on the side channels that hold the bottom in place.

Front rh corner was a bit loose so it was clamped and glued solid.

The front panel of the backbox was replaced with new marine ply.

More cab repairs, glueing and filling needed

First primer coats done!

Some more progress pics on Pop A Card;

Base coat done over the weekend

Webbing has been done too. I ended up redoing the webbing as i wasn't happy with my first attempt at it. My first go at it the webbing looked to be going on ok but it wasn't really sticking to the cab properly. I had it to a point where i thought i was happy with it, brushing off the loose webbing but the more i looked at it the less satisfied i was becoming! I didn't like the way it looked and it had a rough texture to it.

Then i remembered a Volley resto thread done by ktm450 where he cleared over the webbing, i searched for that thread and had a look again.. well i decided to steal his idea and shoot a clearcoat over my newly applied webbing yesterday after i had given the basecoat a quick sand with 400 grit to remove my first attempt.

 A bit of a wipedown with prepsol, sprayed my new webbing paint on, followed immediately by a dust coat of clear to hold it in place. Then i gave it a further several wet coats to finish it off.. turned out MUCH BETTER and a much smoother finish  $#$ It's maybe a little heavier in a couple of places than i would've liked but overall i'm VERY happy with it  *%*

Playfield being stripped in preparation for the resto

Found this when i went to strip the pop bumpers  %.% %.%

The paint below the left sling was flaking off, so i traced what was there and completely removed the old paint so i could re-do that area

First a coat of primer

Then sand primer and mask off for each colour

Progress update;

Blue colour was totally redone, After looking at pics off the net its supposed to match fairly closely the blue colour of the plastics, so i matched it to the new plastics set i have for the game.

Most of the major repaint work has now been done (except the top arch area, yet to be done). I just have the fine detail work to complete and i can mylar the playfield!

I had started on the black key lines in the lower section in these pics;

And cabinet stenciling is now completed, after a run of bad weather which has been holding me up.
Yesterday despite the weather still being a bit dodgey i managed to spray all the blue stencils in the space of a few hours!

Backbox has already been completely reassembled, backglass in and repainted lamp/mech panel refitted.

Decided to sit the backbox for a couple of pics to see how it looked  :D

I still have to do the backbox pedestal with the webbing and red colour (ran out of black paint for the webbing or it would've been done !!)

Another progress update;

Now that the cabinet is painted, pedestal repainted and fitted,
Cabinet hardware assembly started!

Side rails regrained and back on.

Backglass in, refurbished backbox mech panel refitted.

Coin door components; these had been done in hammered metal silver, which besides the fact i never liked the look of hammered metal paint on this on this style door, it was done really BADLY. It looked like someone had clearcoated them with varnish or something, they had a yellowed look to them and looked awful!

I paint stripped the parts, sprayed them with etch primer, followed by silver acrylic and finally a clearcoat over the silver.

Apron stripped and repainted, ready for the Pinball rescue decal!

Tilt mech was really crappy looking so it was dismantled for cleaning and polishing

Polished up as best as i could manage.. not great but a big improvement on what it was!!

More painting progress, The legs too were badly painted in an ugly grey which was falling off. The owner's budget wasn't high enough for new legs ( if i could even find them!!), or rechroming these ones, and they were in a pretty bad state under the paint anyway, i opted to paint them hammered metal silver to save some time and money.

The timber rails for the playfield were sanded and clearcoated as well.

So how come only my resto threads seem to be affected and no one elses?? has this happened to anyone else using photobucket???
Or does everyone else using it already have a subscription with photobucket or are they using a different photo hosting site?
