The Addams Family - High End Restoration
« on: December 29, 2017, 10:14:15 PM »
This project was started around 2 years ago. It was simply a case of an existing customer, who had one request - "I want the best possible Addams Family Machine. Whatever the costs, and however long it takes are not the priority".

So there's no "condition report" to add here. Objective sounds easy enough. Challenge accepted !

During discussions, we used the T2 Cabinet Tim and Stu restored as a reference point. The remark at the time was "I want it to look BETTER". Okay, that's not going to be easy.. So the next level up is a new cabinet from HRP. That was the baseline. Then there was the playfield. CPR or original restored. His choice was "restored original", based on Tim's effort with another project I'm doing and the T2 and Star Wars "Dark side".

Everything else = New, repro or custom mods.

Step 1 - Call Tim and have a cabinet made - to the highest standard.

Step 2 - Pick out ANY Addams Family that I have in stock and start planning and restoring !

So here is a plain old Addams Family that will be the restored game ;

Cabinet - Left side is not that good.

Playfield - We won't be using this one. Tim already has one of my TAF playfields which is nearing completion - so that will be used. The one in this game will be stripped and sent to Tim for the next Addams that I restore that a customer requests an original playfield.

Just a little bit of magnet burn !

I get asked a lot about where I store stripped parts, and how do I organize storage. I use these large bunnings bins that hold just about everything. They slide under the machine, or under one of the benches until I need to access the parts.

Here is the stripped cabinet, that won't be used for this resto, but it is going straight to Tim for a complete cabinet restoration with new decals for the other Addams I'm going to start soon !

Some VERY tired and worn mechs..

Lets just install a decal on the bookcase assy..

.. to cover the fibreglass repairs..

Enough of the ugliness !

Here is the cabinet, propped up and ready to assemble !

Updates will be rolling along with some other games started quite some time ago that I WILL update in the next few days..

Long overdue update.

Original Playfield from @el_timbo86 restored and clearcoated. Stunning result. Time to populate the underside !

New Targets and pop bumper lamp sockets installed prior to most components as I need to staple the wire leads without hindrance.

Wiring loom - cleaned by ultrasonic cleaner and playfield assemblies installed. New subway ramp installed. Also the "Thing" Scoop was replaced as it had too many "welding" attempts !

Lower playfield re assembling in full swing. Amazing playfield !

Sometimes it is the "small things" that I spend time on that ensure the game will be how I want it ! The bookcase assembly is completely rebuilt. I even polish the metal frame. Switches are replaced. Armatures are replaced. This ensures perfect operation and years of trouble free enjoyment !

Same with the Chair bracket. Slightly broken on the mounting tab, so I replace the bracket and the lamp sockets.

Here's the sound upgrade - a Pinsound soundboard and speaker upgrade !

The install will be part of the next update..

The Pinsound Kit was a breeze to install. Definitely believe the Pinsound speakers with the Pinsound board sound better than the Pinsound with other manufacturer's speakers - but having said that, this is the new Pinsound board (V2).

Playfield progress. Just checking the LEDs for GI etc. I use Ablaze LEDs on all restorations.

Some burnt out connectors to replace !

Cleaning the Lamp Insert. I use "Simple Green" as it is not as harsh as Nifti. I leave it to soak for a minute or two and it just wipes off. I've been using Simple Green as Nifti is getting harder to source. Simple Green is a very good alternative. I use it in the Ultrasonic Cleaner as well.

More work on the playfield ;

The Ramp is a new Starship ramp. The ramp is clear, thicker than original and the holes are in the right places.

Below is a photo of the Mantis Swamp Scoop. For High End Jobs, I replace the scoops. These are brushed stainless steel, and look better than originals. A neat trick is to place a "ball drop mylar" in position where the top of the scoop touches the plastic mounted above it. This will ensure that over time, the plastic is not scratched.

Some parts were sent off to be powdercoated, and 2 days later ;

These are satin black, not matt black. So they match the original finish very well. There are some new metal playfield glass trim that I sent off that turned out really well.
Apron done - Licensed decals installed.

On the home stretch !

The game was always going to have a new translite. Excellent reproduction quality, but needed to be trimmed significantly to fit. Need a sharp blade and firm hand !

Test fit with Ablaze-4 Superbrights, and this translite is an amazing improvement. I used color changing LEDs where the blinking globes used to be and the lightning effect with the color changing LEDs was amazing !

Cabinet interior is complete. I used a new lockdown bar receiver as it is a much better look with new decals. Pinsound Sub Woofer installed.

Under the playfield has the wiring more organized, but not complete as the machine needs to go through a thorough test period and QA before everything it tidied up a but more.

The Headbox is complete. New Pinsound configured and working perfectly.

Printed and laminated cards are stapled.

Playfield under test ;

New playfield glass and lockdown bar receiver are test fitted. Final checks are made.

Booked in for delivery to its new owner.

Final bling shots - albeit rushed as I had to deliver to the new owner a day early. Sorry for the reflection of the translite glass.

I think the objective has been met. A restoration to the "original" level, or as I like to call them, "Nearly In Box".
Thanks to Tim and @el_timbo86  for the New cabinet and the playfield resto / clearcoat.
All parts were of course from http://www.rtbb.com.au or it's suppliers.
It is currently being enjoyed by its new owners. Thanks for watching !
