Bally Flash Gordon help.
« on: January 28, 2018, 11:21:31 PM »
A little bug has crept into my Flash Gordon.
Sometimes the coin door coin reject coil will sometimes click on and off intermittently while the game is in Game Over mode.
If I am playing a game and the coin door coil starts to click on and off I loose power to the flippers for a moment then it will come back.
My thought that it may be a realy somewhere.
I will try to reseat some of the comnectors on the boards to see if it goes away.
Any thoughts on what to look for.

Many thanks

Couple of things come to mind. The coil reject armature can sometimes slip out of its' housing. You can tell visually, if the plate is pulling in or not on an angle - not flush with the coil. This will cause issues more relating to a "chatter" - but worth checking. The spring on the relay - has it been changed recently ? If it is too strong, the coil will be fighting the armature.

If not those simple checks - look at the Solenoid Driver board connectors and housings. Make sure there are no pins loose. Reseat and see how you go.

If that still does not fix the issue - remove the solenoid driver board, and look for dry joints. If you have a soldering station close by, resolder all the header pins and also the relay.

Flash Gordon bug Fixed  #*#

After taking the driver board out and checking for dry solder joints, I  re,flowed the solder on all the pins on the driver board and the back of the relay, checked all the connectors as well.
Re installed the board, Coin door coil still clicking away, no change,,  !@#
Had a closer look at the CPU and lamp driver boards, checked all the connectors,, found that each of the boards only had one screw holding it (Earth problem 1.)
Then I discovered that the ground braid from the cabinet was not properly attached with the braid from the back box. (Earth Problem 2.)
I rectified both problems,,  So now the machine has been on for an hour and the fault has gone, so it was a ground issue after all....

Yay,,, #*#
