Gottlieb World Fair
« on: June 04, 2009, 08:39:15 AM »
Hi Guys,
Thought I would ask as there seems to be quite a few EM experts on this group.
Ever since getting into pinball I have always wanted to own a machine from the year that I was born and a opportunity has arisen for me to do so.
I have always loved and collected Bally / Williams pins from the mid 80's to present and always shyed away from the EM era machines mainly because of the stories I have heard that they are a bugger to maintain and parts are very hard to find.
We don't have to many collector's of EM machines here in England the main bulk are DMD collectors ( of which I am one ) so advice is a bit thin on the ground. Having said that I do know one guy who has 30+ EM machines and I have already asked his opinion on the subject but would like a few more peoples thoughts. The guy in question held one of the Northern pinball League meet this year and I had never seen so many EM machines since I was a small boy when the seaside arcades where full of them when on holiday at place's like Blackpool and Southport. At first I thought that this pin meet wasn't going to be as much fun as playing on the usual DMD machines I was used to, but hey I had a very enjoyable day and even managed to rack up 1.5 WWRP points.
So like I started to say I have the chance of acquiring a Gottlieb World fair from 1964 it's not in the best of condition at the moment but its all there, the main work to do is all cosmetic and that's something I am used to with restoring DMD titles so I can't see any problems there, Cabinet is already striped and no sign's of woodworm, as is the backbox, The backglass is pretty good with only one small piece of flaking which can be repaired before sealing. The playfield itself looks in good order just really dirty and I am hoping that once cleaned it should be ok.
Gottlieb World Fair seem to be a popular choice as its at the top of best EM on IPDB so thats one thing in my favor.
Sorry to wobbly on for so long but your thoughts would be much appreciated.
If you got this far without falling to sleep of being board stupid thanks. Main jist is your thoughts on the machine and pro's and con's (sorry for using the con's word) on restoring.
Cheers Guy's
Darren.

Resto advice will come from other good people here, but my thoughts.......
Just do it.
These machines are enjoying a revival, get one now whilst you can.
Maintenance issues: They pretty much maintain themselves by being played.
Your gunna buy it, the bug sounds like its about to bite  #*#

Nice looking machine (from IPDB)

Darren,

I own a World Fair and can tell you it's an AWESOME game to play.

Also same year as my birth - there are lots of other cool Gottlieb pins from that year.

Have you tried contacting Doug who I believe lives in Kent? He is a member on this forum

my advice is never pass up a wedgehead

They are great games and each has their own feel and look. further, they are some of the more collectable of the EM's so if you fix it up and get sick of it there will always be a market for it

World Fair especially is seen by many as one of the best GTB's of the era.

I would say go fot it (depending on price and all the other considerations)

EMs a bugger to maintain?? Who the hell said that??
get the machine working by methodically going through it ONCE and it will be trouble free for years.

As for world fair?? Geez mate - ya cant go wrong! If you dont snap it up then guaranteed therell be a queue behind you that will and you will always regret your decision.

On a side note..... Hows the arcade on Brighton Pier?? I used to be let loose in that place as a boy with a bag of change.
I bought a Midway Monster Gun cos i remembered it from then. I have some fantastic memories of Brighton all lit up at night and the arcade.... what  a place that was!

Do you guys down under have a pinball league? Its a great way to play on many different machines and meet other like minded people, Best Sunday afternoon ever, and with your sunny weather down there another excuse to drink plenty of beer, Where as up here with the rainy weather we drink tea ( well we are British ). Only joking beer does get consumed at the meets also but only if you are not driving home.

Like everywhere else the Pinball machine has had to give way to other kinds of amusement equipment. The stuff That I talk of are video screened bandits which take far more money and need virtually no up keep and of course take up little floor space. And also those crane things that the prize inside is far to big for the claw to pick up, thus impossible to win on. But that doesn't stop people pumping coin after coin in the bloody things.
When we where kid's the amusement arcades where a place that you could go to have a great time without spending a whole lot of money. These days arcades at seaside resorts only cater for one thing, to rob you of your money the quickest way possible.
You are very lucky these days to find a pin at any resort but they are out there but not in the quantities that we remember as youngsters. In the U.K. you can find the odd Stern machine here and there but you have to look quite hard and they are not in every arcade like the used to be.
Sounding a little like a grump old git, I think I have just turned into my Dad.
At least we where there to enjoy the "good old days"
Darren.

First of all thanks to EXTRA BALL for supplying pic's for all to see about the subject in hand @@*
Darren one thing I have found the best with a EM's is not having to chase hard to get IC's or circuit boards ect. (and there costly as well)
EM's are just all switches, keep them clean and they will go for ever.
Also with electronics one day you turn it on go's great the next day you turn it on its dead or a transistor or IC has failed, the battery is leaking or whatever.
And what do I do for a living?   Electronics Technician.
