Fusing individual Gottlieb coils - thoughts?
« on: June 13, 2009, 05:25:51 PM »
Hi guys,

I received my delivery of goods from RTBB and I bought a heap of single fuse holders to avoid having the CFA come around and put out my burning Black Hole (that sounds bad...doesn't it)...

Anyway, from Pinrepair's guide they use inline fuses and doesn't look neat for my taste, but functional.

I've devised this cunning plan (pictured).  Both ends are heatshrinked - one end to the sling switches which was going to positive side of coil..  Attached with use glue gun to secure.  This one is for the slings and not much space to put it.  Also, may lead to confusion later on as wires / coils / fuses would be very close to each other.  A 3amp s/b will be going in.

Can anyone see any issues with this plan?

I like the idea of fusing individual components, makes it VERY easy to find which part is causing probs later in life.....

I had thought of similar fusing, but i was going to mount a fuse-bank in 1 location (cabinet or headbox), but at least ALL fuses would be found in the 1 area....
something to consider.

On the BH, there are other fusebanks under the playfields (both) and the lower cab as well.  I didn't want to have to hack into the loom either and make it look shit later on (in case of resale).
I still need to add caps to these coils as per the service bulletin # 11-P0182.
The main reason is for leaf switch controlled coils in case they get stuck on.
Should I be looking at other coils such as the relay ones and flippers too?

Wondering if the jolt from coils firing will damage the fuses?

I was thinking along these lines.  Its close to the coil stop, which is the main issue.  Others where I can mount on the wood I will, but both slings on the upper pf are very tight for space around them.

Its easily removed it there is an issue without damage to anything and I can use an inline if required.

You are introducing two more points where you could have high resistance joints later on if the fuse holder or fuses get dirty. Just my opinion though.

System 80bs have this arrangement - although I agree - they should not be mounted on the coil bracket.
