I've been making a bit more progress on Gorgar.

I stopped cleaning because I thought I might start to cause damage, it didn't clean up as sparkling as I would have hoped but it was a definite improvement. Removing the mylar had lifted some paint and there were a few other areas that needed touching up. I bought some acrylic paints and a very fine brush from an art supply shop, did a bit of playing around on bare bits of wood and then attacked the playfield. I used an illuminated magnifying glass to work under and some cotton buds dipped in water to clean up.

Overall I'm happy with the touch up results and think I'll stop now. I could keep working, but I think when you touch up a small area your focus can be too detailed whereas viewing the whole playfield looks fine to me.  Before and after pics attached for others to judge.

I'm not sure what I'll do about protecting the touch ups - I'll put a mylar ring around the bumper and probably use some strips and spots on small areas and maybe try waxing to see if that will be enough.

Huge improvement !

Protecting the touch ups ? Depends on the area - Mylar is best if you cannot clearcoat (applies to most of us)..

If it was mine and I had done the touch-ups, I would be very impressed with myself.

Feel free to feel chuffed with yourself!

On Marty's Funhouse thread I posted a description of how I flattened and re-glued my inserts. This is what I said and a picture to try and explain with greater clarity.

What I said was ....
I have recently done this on my Gorgar and first used pretty fine wet and dry to level the inserts as they were quite bowed - one could easily see light through the gap when help against a flat surface.  This sanding caused the inserts to loose a bit of height so they then sunk below the PF top surface level. To overcome this I put a tiny splob of silastic on a matchstick and then placed the matchstick on the insert ensuring the matchstick was really flat, close and aligned to the top surface of the insert.  Use two matchstick for the bigger inserts and set aside to dry, insert on top of the matchstick.  When you go to glue the insert in the overhang of the matchsticks provides a support on the top of the PF.   When the insert to PF glue is dry you peel the matchstick off and are presented with an insert true and flat to the PF surface. Sorry it's a poor description, but not that hard. I will post a pic on my Gorgar resto thread.

The glue I used was superglue gel - was in hardware stores. Pretty cheap and a green cap from memory.  I used it sparingly and ended up with a bit of a gap around the insert, it's enough to fill with wax when polishing.  I read somewhere that this can be filled with normal superglue, but I haven't tried this yet.

Hi Firepower,

Will be attempting mylar removal on my Gorgar down the track, I am worried I will run into trouble and loose paint, my mylar also is shabby around inserts. Just wanted to know if you tried or considered the freeze spray method to remove the mylar?

Cheers
Dave

That's a really smart method of refitting the inserts - great tip !
