Flipper - false triggering some sounds ????

Hi All.

My left Flipper (Stellar Wars) seems to trigger the soundboard fx almost everytime.
It seems the flipper switch? or solenoid coil/dead diode? is creating a spike somewhere that upsets the soundboard and generates the odd ding/boing fx.

Any ideas?

The old "ghost switch" - Try tapping the playfield in the lower left hand side of the playfield.. Could be a switch that is adjusted too close ?

does the score increase ?

No, i've looked at the flipper switch, there's a healthy gap there.
It's not triggered by tapping the cabinet or anything microphonic like that, it's ONLY when pressing the left-flipper button.

Also, it's not the same sound each time, there's a variety of boings/dings and even the odd explosion is triggered too.
I imagine there's a common supply rail that the flipper coil is spiking.

Howdy Mark,

Yep, always tinkering with Stellar Wars, gradually ironing her out....

That other playfield is being sorted, chucking the junky bits and cleaning the usable bits, should be a good start for the "project pin".

It also helps see how everything's mounted, before i open a can'o'worms with Stellar mods.  *)*

Seeya Monday for the manuals, and probably seeya tuesday if you still need more hands for container-day.

GI issues and a phantom sound triggered by a flipper button...

Sounds like a Grounding problem.

Stupid Question #1 - There's a Earth strap that connects from the body, and is fixed to the earth point on the head. Male sure this is connected properly.

Check the connectors throughout the machine - maybe refit all of them..

The sound trigger is hairy, i checked the grounding straps, all in tact, all measure .000001 ohms back to earth point.

The sound trigger is also triggering the normal (bell/chime) sounds when in fact the rom is in "synth" mode.
I manually flick every switch on the playfield and can't find the same sound that the flipper triggers, but when i switch the soundcard into normal mode (not synth) i hear the same sounsd on various targets etc.

Check the ground on the sound board itself, even running  an extra ground from the board to ground strap.
Tey this in flipper ground also.

Im inclined to agree - youve got a little spike from the flipper which is triggering a sound. One of these has an indirect path to ground

Damn! Doh! and everything else.

I discovered today that the Right flipper switch has a 0.1uF greencap (supression) across it, and the Left flipper doesn't.
I added a 0.1uF onto the left flipper switch and Tah-bloody-Daaah !!!! it's now silent!
No more false triggered sounds anymore.

It's reduced from 9/10 false triggers to 0/10 when hitting the flipper switch constanly for 10-20secs or upto 1 minute.

Yay Yippeee  #*# :lol  :D

The caps aren't shown in the manual, i can only guess this was a mod from previous owner(s) ???

I won't forget this in a hurry ;-)

Yep, it's hard to trace components that aren't in the manual.

I guess it always pays to snoop around inside the machine, looking for mods and nasties lurking ;-)
