I don't think anyone is being negative here - just "chewin' the fat" over the idea of printing decals. The thread itself has changed topic a couple of time so just keep in mind that fact and keep it positive. I'm finding it quite interesting to hear the differing opinions.

Question for the gurus - My CV has original decals. The texture is quite different from the "newer technologies". CV seems to be the ONLY game with this texture - and nearly ALL CVs I've checked are the same. I want MY CV to be 100% original - But with reproduced decals that are done the ORIGINAL way - But my question is - What is the "original way" ?

Er not quite... You really need to check your pricing.. you will be using 1200mm wide vinyl yes? Decent vinyl you say??

Even the cheapest banner vinyl will cost you more per roll... then again, vinyl suppliers will make custom length rolls.. you might get 600mm wide 15 - 20M for around the $100 mark... you still have to print it, laminate it and pay for your equipment.

Its a nice statement you make... but it is sheer folly

I have extensive experience with this type of thing and if you can print a full set of cabinet decals for LESS than $50 ACTUAL COST OF MATERIALS I will not believe it!

Add - expertise, cost of expensive machine - etc and you 'realistically' have a COST price exceeding $100.

Anyone who thinks it can be done for less should start pricing the materials and the machine and then come back here and apologise!

As a part-time/casual employee for my uncles former printing business, i can assure you i ONLY use pro vinyls & laminates.
Looks like i get my rolls cheaper than you guys.

I only need 560mm rolls for cab-decals, why waste it on (pricey) 1200mm ?

Homepin, thats why i have stayed off pricing. Everyone is going to get different pricing depending on the size of the company they go to and whether the owner is a mate or not etc.Dont think anyone needs to apologise, cause no one has been rude. If someone has an opinion, and it turns out to be incorrect, they were just incorrect, no big deal.

Strangeways, the answer i reckon, is take the original decals for CV to a printer and they will tell u by looking at the materials and the end outcome, how they were done, or at least how they could today, copy it. Any pro in the print industry will have a good idea how they did it back when, or will/can reproduce it with todays machines.

I was hoping we could focus on what decals people would want to get done that are not currently avail.
I am not going to share my pricing yet, cause my guy is waiting on my input re orders. i have 25 machines i can copy, and access to many others, its all about how much i want done, when by, and a few other factors.

any titles guys.  what decals u want to see made avail. ? since everyone thinks pricing, u might as well expand the post to be about
what members they reckon is a fair amount to pay for full decal sets instead of guessing costs.assuming the new ones are better than the originals/or to save arguments, lets say the same quality/outcome as the originals.
when u buy a new car, u dont guess what the Commodore cost to make, u only care about what ya are willing to pay for it.

560mm will be enough for EM and SS machines. Reason i said 1200 wide is it alllows you to print 2 sides on the one width with border and actually costs less this way. What you say is true - more you buy, less it costs

Not sure youll get anything like a DMD from 560mm vinyl though, pretty sure youll need over 620mm for this.

Don't know if anyone is doing Judge Dredd which is a chronic fader for most.

There are so many variables in the cost side of this, as already mentioned, a one off set will cost a bomb compared to a larger run.  How about we see what cavey can do,  I am sure the prices will be fair and very competitive.  He has made it clear that he isn't in it to make money and you can't ask for more than basically cost price, whatever that cost turns out to be.

Onward and upward.  Get that printing press rolling.

I'll check my ToM when I get home. That's VERY interesting. I believe the repros are not of the same texture. That's a shame.

The texture is from the silkscreening of the original cabinets to wood directly.

When a laminated print is made, the finish is more glossy than the original and very smooth. But will never fade as the original with the UV protection on the laminate is usually guaranteed for 10 years in an outdoor environment.

If original artwork cannot be sourced, to redraw cabinet art would take a couple of days for even a skilled designer/artist.

Factor in the cost of ink, the artists time, cost of viynl and cost of laminate, you would have to punch out hundreds of decal sets at a minimum of $100 to break even.

To fill the inks on a Roland XC540, you would be looking at least $1200.

I would personally pay $300 for a set of decals that would never wear/fade again and have the protection of the laminate to boot.

I do not think that the price is an issue with the decal sets, just the quality must be as good, if not better than original
