Eight Ball Pin - Melb
« on: June 27, 2010, 10:04:10 AM »
Check out this description on this Eight Ball Pin in Melbourne.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/1977-Bally-8-Ball-Fonzie-Pinball-Machine-collectable-/330446057173?cmd=ViewItem&pt=AU_CoinOp&hash=item4cf01eaed5

Saw the 4 bids go up quickly very early in the piece to the current $1300 with 9 days to go when the first 2 photos only were up. Thennnn the last 6 were posted. Bet there are 3 guys out there who are hoping the current highest bidder doesn't pull out!

Description:
"This pinball has been professionally restored. All worn rubbers have been changed. It has been checked out and is in great working condition. The body has been cleaned and the inside has been vacuumed. A great game for the family"

Then:
"This machine is considered to be in excellent condition,  a few light globs might need replacing but that's about it, has the original paint and works"

I would love one of these but might give this one a miss....

"Professionally restored" - When did that happen ? Or did it come with the wear spots from factory ?

This title has kept its price over the last 5 years. I look forward to restoring mine - complete with CPR playfield - minus the wear spots  %.%

There is a saying very apropos to this circumstance: "A fool and his money are easily parted."

I agree with both sides of the coin - certainly not a fool for paying such a high price, because of "the spin" of an auction and the shilling that is commonplace. A "fool" because they didn't do their homework - and nowadays, newbs are checking the internet for "guides" on buying pins - like this forum as an example. It is easy for us to "chuckle" when we hear of overpriced pins - I just shake my head.

Bottom line is - A pinball is worth what the buyer wants to pay.

""Bottom line is - A pinball is worth what the buyer wants to pay"".

That is the quote everyone and anyone who wants to get any style of pin should live by.Newbe or so called collector, professional etc.
If a pin comes along and you want it and are prepared to outlay your hardearned on it then thats all that really needs to be said!

Some SERIOUS work needed on the PF.
For the life of me i cant see the "professional restore", but i have a feeling that the black on the cab has been painted in places.. the wear around the flipper buttons looks real suspect.

No doubt buyer was told that it had been "professionally restored" ........by a professional shark!

$2500 was too much for that machine.. we know it... seller knew it... buyer was totally unaware.

I dont necessarly agree that a pin is "worth" what someone is prepared to pay for it.... in this instance it equates to what i can rip the fool for. Its not worth what he paid for it cos he wont get that value again. Yes - i know... thats life and lesson learned etc.
But there is NO way that machine is restored, and NO way it was worth $2500
And in saying that... NO way it should have been sold as such..

If this game was sold as restored then it was a deliberate act of deception to rip someone off...

.. looks like it worked

apparently this machine was purchased at an auction

the bidders determined the price, not the vendor

a newb buyer could easily pay 2500 from a dealer, and it doesnt make them a fool for doing so

I was a newbie buyer not that long ago, but I certainly did some homework before buying my first pin.

You can't tell me that the pin in question is worth $2500, whether it was from a dealer or not. A new playfield would be around $1000, or someone would have to invest a lot of time to fix the current one.

If the current seller actually believed that the machine has been professionally restored then he has been taken for a ride. Maybe the word 'fool' is too harsh a word for some ears, but the saying was what came to mind when I read this one. I am happy to retract it if people see it as offensive.

Will he get his money back? I doubt it, but stranger things have happened.

"A pinball is worth what someone wants to pay for it" - true to some extent, but to me the real question is not what I would be prepared to pay for it, but what the next person would be prepared to pay for it. In other words, can I get my money back if I have to sell it. If not, I am paying too much in my opinion.

"This machine is considered to be in excellent condition"  !@#
I would hate to see a pin the seller would class as average condition  :lol
