A new gamesroom, your opinion is invited
« on: September 21, 2010, 06:41:11 PM »
As I have posted previously, I have run out of space for my pinball machines
I cannot even set up half of what I have
So it seems I will have to get a bigger house, I might as well build

To house the games I can see 3 options;
Basement games room, build a house on two levels and have the games room underneath
Games room, build the games room  almost as big as the rest of the house
Games shed, the traditional man cave

Personally I like the basement idea
No need for too many windows
Dungeon (basement) kinda cool

If you were starting from scratch, what would be your choice?

Pete

If I was starting from scratch, I'd look at the USA collector's homes - they seem to always go to the basement. I like the idea of a seperate "man cave", and the fact that your pins are safely underneath the house rather than outside in a shed etc.

Dungeon - no windows - that way you can hang frames, trophies etc etc..

The basement is not a good option unless u have a lift, or unless you have a double storey house that has driveway access to the bottom area. (I dislike double storey houses anyway).

The huge huge house with an internal gamesroom is the BEST option, but building costs need to be looked at.

The seperate shed is fine, make it a big bastard and u cant go wrong. More room the better. Allow for up to 30 machines cause you are over half way there Pete from the photos I saw of your collection last !  ^^^  By the time u finish collecting, you will use all the room for sure !  ^^^ ^^^ ^^^

An option might be to build a shed with sliding door instead of a roller door, line it with cool room panel on the walls and gyprock on the ceiling plenty of insulation bats inbetween the walls and ceiling and then fit glass sliding door panel on the inside,i just did this for the greyhound kennel and it keeps a constant temp no-matter how cold it is and is always warmer than our double brick house, here is a link to the shed mob we used it has a pic of the sliding door http://www.trubilt.com.au/farm-sheds-barns.htm

I second Marty's comments!!!! His stairs not to mention driveway is an absolute KILLER. Try and keep it all on one level, if possible of course, makes everything so much easier!

That is where my head is at
when I think of how much $$ worth of games I have, I want to keep them as safe as possible

It is also easier to have a quick game or two if the games are in the house, rather than have to go out and unlock the shed

Speaking from experience, keep away from stairs.  I've got WAY to many of them and its a pain in the ar ^.^e

I will agree, but how many time will each game have to travel up/down the stairs?
I consider all my games to be keepers, I don't plan on changing thr lineup too much

This is the spot that causes the brain to short out  ::)
I already have 27 games, and I think I will stop at around 40  ^^^
if I allow 3 square meters per game, that means I will need 120 square meters of space
that is not counting space for some chairs, maybe a small bar, toilet (so visitor need not have to go into the main house)

Maybe I should change and become a CCC, and just get the top 10 games in Minty condition  :D

Just do all of the above mate.   Basement for your favorite players.   Massive shed for the rest that way your babies are safe and easy to play in the house and you have a mancave for the guests

I like the basement idea personally, however, not if it is below ground level.
If something goes wrong then rising water and pinballs don't mix!
I only say this as I have friends in the US who have basements and some of them have had flood problems,
(No they don't live in New Orleans!) Another friend has a high humidity problem in hers, has a sump pump in it
and a dehumidifier, too much dampness for me.
Better if your home is on a sloping block then it isn't like a large pool for water to collect in underneath.
Lets go Brandon!

Hell if I had the cash I'd go with a walk-out basement.  I've drooled over a few of the American collectors basements and I think the sloping block that levels out to the back yard is a great idea.  You would need a block that slopes from the road (higher) to the backyard (Lower), then the stairs aren't needed to get the pins in, you just wheel them throught the back door.

That's my fantasy house anyway!  Good luck with whatever you decide.
