After letting the undercoat dry for a couple of days, i sanded it back with 280 grit then 400 grit ready for the black basecoat. Again i used White Knight brand spray paint. I did about four coats in all on the cab. it was then put aside to dry properly while i did the stencils on the backbox.

For the backbox, i supported it over the end of my bench so the side wasnt sitting on the floor to do the stencils, one side at a time. First i did the yellow, about 3 or 4 LIGHT coats, waiting 10 - 15 mins between coats, then allowing another 15 - 20 mins before removing the stencil. A few days later i did the red/orange colour. The colours i used were Dulux carnival yellow and volcano orange (bought from Bunnings), which were a pretty reasonable match to the original colour. Then i flipped the back box over and did the other side... 2nd verse same as the first!!  :D :D :lol

and here is the finished backbox!! came up pretty good me thinks  :D now i just need to start on the cab stencilling now that it has had a couple of weeks for the paint to fully dry.

During the last week i have been working on the stencilling on this one as well as my KISS cab, going back and forth between the two  ^&^

Both KISS and Galaxy cabs are now ready for stencilling.. (update on KISS coming soon)!  *%*

Really deep gloss on the cabinet - looks great. After the stencilling, do you clear the finished paintwork ? I'm considering this for some upcoming repaints.

Thanks Nino. It was a real BITCH getting the cab and backbox as good as they are. I used, as i said, White Knight paint for this repaint, think im gonna go back to Dulux paints, it seems to go on much better with less hassles, just finished the KISS cab basecoat today and it turned out real nice using the Dulux paint. I'm seriously considering getting a compressor and spray gun for doing cabs if i do too many more. would make the job MUCH quicker and easier i think.

I know some guys like to clear over the stenciled art but i dont do it, i dont think its necessary. Did any of the pin manufacturers clear over the stenciling?? as far as i'm aware no one did it  !@# correct me if i'm wrong.

Man that has come up great @@*. Awesome stuff.

I bought a Galaxy just to have a bash on, and within a few minutes of playing it I understood why people go on so much about classic Sterns. Classic Stern = AWESOME gameplay. This game is so underrated. I own a Seawitch also but I play Galaxy more. Just too addictive.

Yeah, I agree, early Sterns are great, Galaxy, Meteor, Trident, Sea Witch, Flight 2000.

Stern certainly had the outer space and ocean themes covered really well.

Looking forward to the rest of the Galaxy resto, its coming up really nice so far.

Hi guys, just another quick update:

Got a start on the cab stenciling this afternoon. I started cutting the stencil out of white cardboard for the left side for the yellow yesterday and finished cutting it this morning, ready to start the yellow stenciling. 1st pic shows the 1st stencil ready to use.

Normally i only make one stencil for each colour for a cab, and just flip it over for the opposite side and reuse it. But for this game having the name stenciled on each side of the cab i had to make two.. one for each side for the yellow.

Anyway some pics.. same procedure as used on the backbox.. several light coats, 15 mins between coats and removed the stencil about 20mins after the last coat.

Next i cut the stencil for the opposite side while the paint was drying. So because i had a stencil for each side for the yellow, no need to wait several days to do the right hand side  #*# i DID allow a few hours for the first side to dry touch dry, before doing the rh side. It was just a simple matter of putting wood blocks under the corners so the freshly painted side was up off the floor.

Some pics of how its looking so far, i'll now allow a week for the yellow to fully cure before doing the red. In the mean time i should be able to do the yellow on the cab front tomorrow!

not to the best of my knowledge, Mitch. I don't think clears were ever added for these vintage machines, or EMs for that matter. But I have noticed restorers in the USA sometimes add a semi gloss clear to protect the paint. The last repaint I completed (Jacks Open) didn't need a clear and looks great four years after the repaint.

Galaxy and Meteor are faster than any Bally of that era (and everyone knows I love Ballys). When they are cleaned and waxed the ball is simply "dangerous".   %.%

Time for a little update..

The cab stenciling is now done. A few pics of how it turned out after the red had been done. The sides and the yellow on the front were done several weeks ago, and the red on the front was done today. Just a couple of bits to touch up and its done.. finally  ^&^  #*#

Now i can start putting it back together and tell the owner to come and take it.. lol

I'm not doing the playfield at this stage, i was only asked to repaint the cab, i may get asked later on to do the pf. Next to do will be to regrain the side rails and refit them. And also i still have to paint the backbox pedestal and refit it. I'll post some more pics later on when its all back together with the backbox sitting on the cab!!
