North Qld Cyclone
« on: February 02, 2011, 09:44:09 PM »
My thoughts go out to all the people in North Qld, hope you all make it through the cyclone unscathed, we have some family members up in Townsville they are already experiencing very strong winds.
There have been a lot of predictions saying this cyclone is 10 times Tracy and even bigger that Katrina.
Whatever the outcome it will be one of the biggest natural disasters this country has ever been dealt.

Yes, I hope all the people in the north get through this safely.
Some facts I heard today.
The eye of TC Yasi is 70 kms wide (that's the eye, not the cyclone itself, that is 500 kms wide).
TC Tracy that hit Darwin, was 48 kms wide overall (includes the eye + the tail).
This morning on Sunrise, they said there was enough energy in TC Yasi to power the world for 1 year. Yeah, 1 year! WTF!
Stay safe mates.
Ya just gotta luv an EM.

"We'll all be ROONED said Hanrahan"

The winds have just started to get serious where I am in Kuranda (up in the hills from Cairns).

Fingers crossed at this point but we did spend 2 Days preparing....

The lights are starting to flicker however ...

I'm hoping our Northern neighbours don't suffer any huge losses. This is one hell of a disaster that is about to happen. My thoughts are with you all and I hope that there's a speedy recovery in the aftermath.

All OK here in Kuranda - power went off at 11pm and hasn't come back on yet.

A few small branches down around the area but no major problems here in Kuranda.

Looks a bit different around Tully however........

Good to hear your ok Mike,

Our family in Townsville are ok one had a tree come down on roof of house; another lives in a Queenslander and has 6" of water in bottom section of house already, water is expected to rise during the day, but all are ok aparently

Extraordinary weather, hard to believe so much grief up North (and Northern Vic for that matter, and even Southern Vic as I type and the rain pours down from the remnants of Yasi).

Despite so much loss of property and destruction, only one known fatality. Small comfort for those close to that unfortunate person, but at least most were spared.

Hard to think how people are going to get up and going again.

Im not sure that they do...

I look after a lot of Subway stores.. i had to go out to one after the flood to a small shopping centre that went completely under. Subway will be open again next week sometime, but i had to wonder why... the rest of the centre was pretty much deserted.. 5M of water wne through here and its screamingly obvious that many shop owners have just walked away from the businesses.
No insurance for so many mean that they cannot restock and start again and so shops are still inundated with mud and abandoned - is really strange to see this... its just a ghost town of financial ruin.

Local pizza joint in another area went under - its now gone as has the bottle shop next to it... little pockets of local business left empty.
Times are real tough already for retail... this flood and wind damage just completely kills off any hope of continuing.
The brothel i look after on the other hand is already newly giprocked and almost ready to open with a bit of redesign... again no insurance but i guess business is good!
