1978 Playboy GI problems
« on: February 22, 2011, 03:53:26 PM »

 Sometimes when i turn my playboy on the play field lights are out. Everything works as normal but no lights on under the plastics. Can someone
 point me in the right direction. Cheers Paul

J1 on the power supply provides the GI power to the playfield. If you have GI behind the backglass, then it might be as easy as a connector issue. With the machine off, remove J1 and refit. Turn the game on. If there is still GI behind the backglass, bit not the playfield, CAREFULLY wiggle J1. If the playfield GI comes on, then it is a connector issue.

 Ok the good news is the playfield illumination is back on.
 The bad news is the game wont reboot and all numeric dispalys are out  !@#.
 (Bonus light 3 remais on inthe playfield)

 I noticed the plastic connector housings were extremely tight and some of the connector pins have burn marks on
 them. thers is also some discolouration of the rectifier board pins
 I think at the very least i am will have to replace all pins and connectors. ahh the joys of pinball....  %.%
 Also I may need a replacement rectifier board ( AS-2518-18 ) Does anyone know where i can buy these in a kit
 form locally?

Proves that the power supply connectors are fatigued. Very common issue on Bally's and Stern's of this era. You have two choices, repin the connectors and the board itself, or buy a new board. But you will still have to repin the connectors. The power supply board can be repaired / upgraded - have a look here ;

New board can be purchased locally

If you need to "get by" for now, grab some sandpaper and run it over the connector pins on the power supply.

 I just cleaned the pins on the board and machine has come back to life. $#$ Not sure for how long.
 I Might wait a bit longer before i repin the connectors.

Yes - may work for one day or one year ! Good thing is you know that they need to be repinned, and you have time to organise while the game is still playable.
