WPC driver board repair - Burnt G.I.
« on: October 29, 2011, 04:25:31 PM »
Just a few pics of carnut’s WPC driver board repair.

You can see the damage to the board at J115 and J120, and prior repairs to J121.

The top three pins on J115 (pins 10,11 and 12) were totally missing and the traces on the top side of the board were also damaged.
Three jump wires had been soldered to the three affected triacs, and these wires then run to a screw terminal block to join to the original wires.
You can see one of the wires sticking out beside J115.

Pin 11 was missing on J120 and had damage to the traces as well.

Also J101 had the wires soldered directly to the board, which had been cut to remove the board from the game.

After carefully removing the old hacked/damaged headers, I installed new friction lock headers at J115, J120 and J121.

Removed all previous jumpers and cleaned up excess solder.  Note the damaged traces between J120 and J121.

The header pins at J101 were ok, so I just desoldered the wires and cleaned up the back side pads.

Time for some new jumper wires!

Jumper wires have been installed and all tested for continuity as per clays guide.
(Please note that when I initially installed the jumpers for pins 10 and 11 of J115, I reversed the order so had to redo these two wires.  The photo shows them still incorrectly installed.)

I also re-pinned the connectors at J115, J120 and J121. The photo shows they were quite a mess before hand.

Also installed a new connector at J101.

Here are the pics of the finished job.  Looks much tidier and will certainly be more reliable and easier to work on in the future.

Tested out and GI all seems to work and no more blowing fuses. ^^^

ADDITIONAL INFO
I re-pinned connectors J120 and J121 as per the White Water manual but I’m starting to think that the manual might be wrong (Heaven Forbid!) as they seem to be reversed compared to other WPC games which have the thinner gauge wires at J120 and the thicker wires at J121.

Could any WH20 owner confirm this for me?

Not too sure if it will affect things as these pins are all paired up anyway between connectors.  Maybe backbox and playfield GI will be reversed?

Might have to come back for another visit Craig.

A mandatory repair for the majority of WPC pinballs. Even if the connectors look OK, they should be replaced.

Looks heaps better !

If the headers (pins) are replaced then always replace the housing and crimp contacts (if the housing is the original housing or not the high temperature type)
