This machine isnt mine.. it was brought to me today for me to fix up and get going.

What can i say?? 1936 STONER machine... i love Stoners and despite my best attempts to buy this, i had to settle on fixing her instead.
This is very early pinball and predates the famous Bally BUMPER by some 11 months... no bumpers on this pin.. just glorified bagatelle.

The machine.. I had to put some legs on her.. these are ones i had made up for a 1937 RICOCHET









Theres no key with the machine, but the glass is missing and so i acn get to the machines inside from above.. no lock down on these.. just lift out.
Inside is the ball return panel



Underneath this reveals a few problems



Burnt out selenium rectifier



Someones already been here and tagged the wires for me... lucky eh?  &&





Few wires missing here and there.. contacts between cabinet and PF dirty and bent up



Nothing major to fix up.. few fiddly bits, but then again, theres not much inside these machines at all really, its all VERY basic.

What a classic the underside of the play field has the same pattern as Masonite ???

What's the plan ? Resto or fix up ?

Get rid of the selenium rectifier mate - they will STINK your house out if they are on the way out !

Rectifier is COOKED... has already stunk someones house out...

.. and yes.. its a sheet of masonite under the pf.. its what holds the balls in the pockets.. when you push the coin slide it pushes this sheet up to allow balls to drop.
No steel balls on this game.. they are hard little white and red resin balls.. only 3 of them though.. 3 are missing.
 Plan is to get working and a clean up... no restore required.. natural patina is valued more than a crisp looking game

Been going through this machine to place in my head just how she works... the following threw me a bit..

These wires went out of the back of the machine and then back in again... they were connected to the 240V!!



Follow then through and you get to 2 of the cabinet to PF connectors



This is just bloody crazy and the arcing would have caused a fire.. apart from that 240V coils??? No bloody way!

Power is meant to come in from below the cabinet.. this is standard on these old machines.. then to the transformer which gives us 6.5VAC and 18.5V... the 18.5V goes to the rectofier to give approx 18VDC which IS COIL VOLTAGE - LOL,
Anyway, ive replaced the rectifier and from above all looks original





All voltages are present and correct.. so i can move to the PF now and start opening all the switches which have been bent to buggery.
This brings me to this very nice bit.. take a look





Its a kicker!!

ball hits the switch and closes... this fires this coil



ball is kicked back through the switch.

I tried to find the posting of the wikipedia innovations in pinball to find out when the first kicker was.. couldnt find it.. but heres one from 1936!

Quick search on IPDB reveals in July 1934, Shyvers Coin Automatic Machine Co made a machine called Cannon Fire Jnr, which had playfield kickers... earliest one listed, but then MadCap is not listed at all as having kickers  ^&^

Interesting about the kicker idea Gav.. wouldn't have much power tho I'd imagine.

Packs more punch than youd think... the RHS one kicks the ball so hard that it flies straight over the wire frame lanes!

nice machine and quite well made for the era and looks like a fun game, was it a payout machine?
