Custom Creature Decals or Not
« on: January 05, 2012, 09:22:18 AM »
Hi guys

I need your opinion as I have been burdened with a decision for a while.

My Creature plays well and my playfield is about a 8.5 (if I get ramps 9) out of 10 but the decals are s**t - suffering the usual cigarette lighter burns on the eyes and else where, a few bolt holes from who knows what, wear around the buttons, scraps etc and a few bodgy black spray paint repairs and dribble. I have been hunting for 16 months now for a new set of creatures with no luck.

I am due for a knee op so will have some time to kill soon and have been contemplating doing a custom set of decals for the CFTBL.

Theme - Drive-in to blend in with the playfield
Coin door - like in the the recent drive in post on the 2nd photo is a wall with the backs of cars maybe lined up at the gate to head in and like the speaker grill.
Cabinet - projector shed / diner, cars parked facing the the drive in screen (backbox), with a playground at the base of the back box
Backbox - big screen with a 3D creature stretching out of the screen towards the player, ufo in the top corner, especially since the translite suggests the big screen.

Colours will be bright in areas but dim lit in others to represent the drive.
Cars will be of the 60's era keeping in theme

A guy (Hoopstar) on this forum did rally together 10 interested people (me being one) to hopefully get a licensed set but still who knows if it comes off. So in about 20 days time I will be heavily restricted and 6 weeks off work so need something to do.

Also this would be a little more family friendly with little kinds (grabbing at straws) and I am aware it will pull the value down but if on sold the new owner just needs to get a original set when they are released ????? to bring back to original. Where does hot rodding stop  !@#

Post your vote and give me your opinion and don't be too harsh with me  *%*

Personally, I like the idea . . .

BUT 99% of collectors are "purists" so in reality there would be almost no demand IMHO.
I imagine it would be heaps of work & hassles to do a one off for yourself, so perhaps as suggested above - patience is a virtue  #@#

Don't do it, like the cow man said, you don't play the cabinet  *%*

I think you should make the new ones and post it up for us to have a look at.
It will give you something to do and you could make a better decision once you have something to compare the original art to.
I think it's a great idea but I would like to see what you come up with before I'd say do it.
I've seen a really great AFM custom decal that I actually prefer to the original.
Who knows, others may like your design and want a set for their creature too.

One of my "pet hates" is seeing a pinball with the original artwork painted over. Happens a lot with EMs. No real reason, just painted over.

For a game like CFTBL - I would never change the original artwork unless a licensed set became available. I would wait, as these things seem to find a way to eventuate.

I would not vote until I see the proposed art

If you plan on keeping your creech, why not?

I am a traditionalist when it comes to pinball - restored to original look, or leave as is. Take these AFM decals for example - I know some would like them, but they are unnecessary bling that adds nothing to the game and IMO in fact detracts from it.

I hear what you're saying and those are the exact decals I was talking about.
I'm a little biased though 'cause I love the bling.
I've also seen some alternative Flintstones and World Poker translites that I think are way better than the originals.

Please make the art, I would love to see what you come up with.
Like I said you don't have to use them.

I guess beauty is really in the eye of the beholder (not that the martians on the original are actually beautiful or anything!!:)
