Lost pinball mojo

Sorry guys if I sometimes post weird like topics but here goes. I have read in the past a few guys who have left forums/the hobby or temporarily put pinball on hold for reasons I am unsure of. So I was thinking what that reason could be and thought a quick discussion my help others maybe heading down that track.

For myself I don't know if I was beginning to tire of the hobby, but something tells I was. I started enjoying pinball for playing enjoyment sake. Then own a game. Then fix the game and buy another and another and so on. Before too long I was collecting for collecting sake and of course spending huge time fixing and pimping my games.

After wrecking my arms and a forced lay off from fixing my games, my only option was playing. Firstly just plunging a ball out and watching it drain. Later the ability to flip a bit and finally playing and nudging again. What hit me real hard was how I missed playing and how much I actually enjoy playing and I mean not playing to simply test the game out.

I think I nearly left the hobby.

What are your thoughts guys? And how many thought about hanging up the flippers fingers? Thanks

To me, playing is the best bit, closely following by socialising. That's why I love going to meets! Just aren't too many here in Melbourne for some reason!!

I don't feel the need to buy pinballs anymore, there was no need in the first place..only a want.
If buying pinballs is a hobby than I am well and truly over it but i still like playing some of them from time to time.

You can never say never. At the moment, personally I'm out of touch, don't think I'll buy anything this year, might do a trade or sell something else, but a purchase isn't high on my list. Other priorities take precedence, machines fall by the way, the mojo changes. But the pendulum always swings both ways.

There will always be active communities, meets, and more pins on site etc, so all is good

I love playing I hate fixing cause I'm shit at it, playing pinball with good rules is what I'm after, down sizing is the best move I made and I still love the hobby

I go through cycles with all my hobbies, as some move down the interest list, and others to the top. Right now I'm content with my collection, with the passing thought of letting one or two go, thinking of one or two I might buy, and even going a day without playing. Couldn't imagine a house without a bunch of games though, ready to lure me back with those wonderful silver balls. Looking forward to a couple of playfield swaps soon - that I find the really invigorating aspect of the hobby, seeing that new playing surface and shooting the ball over it for the first time.

Never had this problem and I never will have the problem. Although my angle is a bit different, I prefer the journey of a machine. Starting from the "hunt" for a game, the restoration or repair and finally the finished machine. That's where I get my kicks from. I'm not much of a player, but I've been around the games all my life. I really don't know any better and I cannot think of like "without" pinball. I can understand people need "breaks" and lose the Pinball Mojo. Stories of entire collections on eBay overnight and empty gamesrooms. I guess it is like any hobby - it works in cycles.

My thought for each morning is "where am I getting my next game from..

I used to wake up like that every day as well...good for some but for me it is not who I am and it was driving me crazy.

Started this just because I have always liked to play pinball and when I got my first one I thought man if it breaks I'm screwed, turns out I now like fixing pins as much as I like playing them. I soak up all the know how I can, at this stage there would have to be something seriously wrong with one of my pins for me to let someone els have a crack at it.

I get just as much enjoyment when we have people over watching them have a good time as i do playing myself.I did not have a big collection to start with,6 pins i always thought was enough,but then i thought lets add one more,and you start looking and the whole thing was doing my head in.I also down sized and sold 2 and after my latest purchase arrives,which will put it up to 5 am i happy with this,no i have already decided i will sell 2 again if one of the new releases from JJ or Stern turn out to be a cracker of a game in the future,and one of the games i would sell was is a grail pin for me.I am changing in what i want out of a pin,why ? who knows maybe i am going crazy as i get older.

Going through this a little myself, spose you call it hobby burnout. From 5 machines I am down to 2, what cash I had leftover when on the credit card/bills. I will get more oneday I guess, but I just dont see any extra machines giving me anymore satisfaction. The meets are definately the duck nutz, and being part of forum activity.

I don't know if it is burnout or not but I am not enjoying the pins anywhere near as much as I used to.
I guess priorities change...they certainly have for me.

Maybe keep the one and let it gather dust. I'm sure the day you play it again after a good spell will get you back into the spirit
