Joker Poker - Only taken me a year to start it !
« on: April 08, 2012, 09:40:29 PM »
With Embryon currently going nowhere fast I thought I may as well start my Joker Poker restore.
Its been a LONG time since I have done a full game and it felt good to be back into it today.
Here are some random shots ......I will list 'the plan' after the photos.

Look at the poor little playfield being DWARFED by Embryon !

There is a few places like this around the playfield.

How do you fit an entire playfield into a coin box - like this !!

Not REALLY looking forward to pulling these to pieces  @.@

Bog spread all over the sides - sanded this off this tonight and it is glass-like ( well no I am lying but it is a pretty smooth finish )

All sanded off and rubbed back with 180 then 400 so it is silky smooth.
Just one area I stuffed up and will have to rub back tomorrow
Black Neck is off on the bench clamped and glued - will fill and smooth this tomorrow.
I have actually tested a white inside the cabinet in this shot too - Satin White , should do the job nicely.

OK - the full plan.

Full Cabinet Re-spray ( Gav I started with ya and will have my paints in a week from tomorrow  () )

Legs Re-Chromed.

New Leg bolts and Leg Levellers.

Polish all the metal - side-rails, door , door surround using my beloved Autosol after I get any rust marks off the metal and re-grain the siderails and lock down bar

New Coin Door Sticker and lock - AND Aussie Pinball keyring of course  ^^^

New Shooter assembly.

Apron and shooter cover decal using Flipper Rescues decal product  ( excellent product - already purchased )

Full playfield re-build on top using all new parts, drops, plastic set, posts, guides, bumper bodies and skirts , bumper caps, rubbers, globes etc ( already purchased some time back)

New flipper kits

New Sleeves for all PF coils and springs for drops.

Playfield fill and airbrush for those worn area's.

New Mylar rings around bumper bases to cover new airbrushing work.

All connectors will be replaced

Pascall Board installed ( already purchased )

Replacement BG when CPR release it ( meant to be quite soon )

New displays if need be.

I think thats it for now.

Will do updates as I am able to - but I want to keep this one rolling , with a plan to have it done complete in 4-6 week ( ends ) from now......then I will fire it up ............and it probably wont work  ^.^ :lol ^.^

Stencils will be sent out this week mate... ^^^

PF looks VERY good apart from the usual wear around the bumpers... how confident are you with restoring this area???

Some good news for you.. GOTTLIEB used the same colours for many many years, and the red around the bumpers will be the same red im using to restore AMAZING SPIDERMAN.
When i mix a colour, i always end up with far more than i need.. so if you want i can send this paint down to you... its acrylic lacquer and should be thinned down with ALL PURPOSE THINNERS or better still.. go to your paint supplier and by a small tin of ACRYLIC RETARDER.. it doesnt dry out so quick and is excellent for putting through an airbrush.. or you can keep painting the worn bit out with a fine brush and adding to it everytime till you bring it level ( acrylic lacquers shrink back and dry lower than youve painted).. let me know.. have approx 300ml of this

Awwww Gav - U R teasing me now  :lol

Yep - I will grab that 300ml from you please.
My local art store has the retarder and the lady there loves helping me out ( she is about 60 and I think she has the hots for me and loves talking pinball  ^&^ ) I am fairly confident I can do that area - I have Tamiya white Putty, Some friskit film, a new scalpal and an airbrush - so I will give it a good go at least.

There is an area of PINK on the PF I have to do as well.

Red Paint leftover- that would be just BRILLIANT - and thankyou  ^^^
Looking forward to the stencils as I am super keen to get this cracking now.

All the best with the restore, looking forward to seeing the completed game and comparing notes.

Nothing to get too excited about here boys - just a white box - but I have to kill an hour or 2 between coats so I thought I may as well chuck a couple of pics up....

The whole cabinet ( and backbox sides ) have been filled with a timber filler and then sanded back with 180 paper and then any spots I may have missed were re-filled and then the whole cab was sanded with 400 paper - it felt quite 'smooth' at that point.

2 coats of primer were done, sanding lightly in between with the 400.
I will do 3 coats - LIGHT coats - of the 'Satin' white base.

One coat on here ....

And this side in the shot below is completely finished.
It is really smooth and I tried to take an image that could show that ( difficult to do ).

I did miss filling a couple of TINY spots but I doubt anyone other than me ( or bloody Nino  :lol ) would notice them
It looks a little glossy near the rear stand but it isnt that bad - I think the camera flash created the extra light in this shot so that reflection came out worse than what it is.

I definitely wouldnt use GLOSS paint and I didnt want that awful 'feel' of FLAT paint ( the 'chalkboard feel ) - so I went with the Satin finish as it sits right in between ( well in my mind it does )

So by the end of Sunday night I should have the base white done on the cabinet and backbox.
I still have to spray the globe door and the BG frame as that is BLACK at the moment.

Next main job will be to do the 'toothbrush splatter' of black dots on this base white
Will practice that first on some spare board  - bit scared of this it to be honest  !@)

SPLATTER TIME !

Update.
Got meself a new toothbrush
Got the FIRM type.
Dipped it into some Black satin paint.
And this is the result

( I found best results were if I held the toothbrush around 50cms away from cabinet while pointing the 'head' of it towards the cabinet and flicking mainly just the end )

The yellowing in the photo is from the light and flash - it isnt like that in real life.

Got the stencils last Friday - big thanks to Gav for those  #*#

Should be ready for the orange tomorrow if I get time  #@#
