Well I got desperate and swaped the sof transformer with the tfx from FIRE! and well. I now have 16 to 18vdc across the cap. There still is some flucuation in the insert lamps but nowhere near as much. the g.l. is brighter, the flippers have more power. I checked the voltage to the flippers after i changed the tfx, 49 volts.
looks like the tfx has been changed with one out of an older machine at one stage i'm assuming.
I haven't put the tfx in the fire! pin yet but i hope i don't have the same problem.
the fire doesn't have as many inserts so im hopeing it will be ok.

10 points to marty m, he did mention it could be the transformer. well done and mm and thanks to everyone else who gave me some seggestions.

Nice progress.

Hmmm, possibly not the original transformer fitted?

You might be lucky that the SOF transformer may work in your 'fire' if it requires less grunt....a win-win maybe?

I got around to putting the sof transformer in the fire and now i have the problem in the fire.
the g.i. is duller and guess what the more lights that are on the duller the inserts get.
i will have to see if mark has any spare transformers around.

You might be facing a brick wall there, as it took me a lot of searching to find a 'spare' transformer at Marks just 2+ weeks ago. (unless you wanna buy a project pin).

Perhaps put out the call here on AP for anyone with spare transformer/cabinet project etc.

If it's only the GI lamps that are dimming, perhaps just look for ANY tranny with 6.3VAC wiring at some decent AMPs and use it AS WELL as the one in your pin.

i sent mark an email about it.
but it would be probably cheaper to get another transformer.
i was thinking about doing that (an extra transformer) but i didn't want to modify it.
i will probably do it to one of the other pins that i will sell.
