Space invaders back glass globes
« on: January 23, 2013, 09:47:08 PM »
While waiting for my order of globe holders, I noticed a few globes out on my internal backglass as opposed to the marque ones. I inserted new globes but no go. I decided to insert a led and it worked, out of the four dead globes I got two to light up with LEDs.

Am I correct in assuming these globe holders are suspect including the ones the LEDs worked in?

Why would an led work and not a standard globe? I tried both types several times to rule out dumb luck

Reseat the connectors on the Aux lamp driver board. From memory, the chaser lights are controlled by this board. It could be as simple as reflowing the connector pins.

The ones that are on the outside edge of the back box, what you probably called chase lights?? The globes that got sorted out via plug reseat were the ones that seat in the white part of the back box or that sit behind the backglass

Are they 555 or 44/47 sockets ? You can swap them out with working globes to isolate the problem.

They are 44's and I don't think SI has any 555's

I tried putting in globes from the ones working next to them but that didn't work. What do you mean by swap them out? Sorry mate but I may be slow on the up take, thanks

Will be the corresponding scrs on the aux lamp driver, or the sockets. I'll check the schematics over the weekend.

Nino I think I may have found the problem so I don't want you to go to any trouble finding maybe what I already know. I think you are correct in that it is a pin/connector issue. I looked at the schematics and found that 3 sets of 2 globes were out on my machine pins 52,21,13. I lost 13 after reseating j2 & j3. I jiggled j3-8 and looked at theses globs and they were on again.

So unless you think otherwise, I will try reflowing solder on the pins and if this doesn't work redo the connectors.

Hope I haven't put you to too much trouble  ^&(

All good nino, there were more pins on the aux lamp pcb that showed definite cracks in the solder joints, so reflowed and back box perfect. I have removed insert lamps previously thinking its the holders but I'm sure some were out due to the lamp pcb. Thanks for all your tips guys.

And if skybeau ever reads this he will be pleased to know that I started early in the day to do this fix and not after a few wines which always makes my board repairs a little dubious  @.@

No worries Rob. Always satisfying to do your own repairs. Best part is - it cost you nothing !
