I recently did mine.
I used this cable
http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=WC7513Standard Win XP installation, no screwing with port settings at all.
I ran the app and did the update with no issues. The filename from memory for 1.5 was a really random named file and i remember reading somewhere that you couldn't rename it otherwise it wouldn't work.
