Ok after much head scratching and diagnostics with an old win 95 keyboard, heaps of cursing. Put in another DB25 cable connector to the motherboard in the pc and discovered that the ribbon lead was on the wrong way around. So now all is good. The tech who put the battery in must have been having a bad day.
