Yea, i ended up using a socket from a socket set to rest the piston and bracket on, then slid a small size electrical screwdriver into the pin so that the sleeve of the screwdriver fit snug on top of the pin, slowly tapped away and the pin eventually came out the bottom, into the socket.
Difficult to explain in words, but i got there in the end.
