That's an original hack !

First thing I'd check is dry joints behind the relay. Since the machine has changed hands - I'd be checking all the connectors and at least reflow the connector pins. These relays are sometimes mounted on a socket - not hard wired. So check the socket and the legs on the relay.

I don't have the schematic at work, but I'll have a look when I get home.
