You are competely right BUT - try going into Jaycar and asking the clerk for a "One N 4001" and see what strange stare you get. If you said "I would like an IN4001" he will have a better chance of knowing what you mean (maybe).
In all products I design and build I always designate this part as "IN400X"
Just because Jaycar employs pimply faced technically incompetent nongs does not permit me to use the wrong part number - nor to cease being a pedantic twit!
Just out of interest try a search on the Jacay site for IN400 and you yield no result, on the other hand search for 1N400 and you are rewarded with a selection of diodes! Perhaps you and I are both being too hard on Jaycar employees?
