I've never seen a ball break a playfield glass or crack it. The glass is usually tempered glass which will shatter into a million little pieces. I've seen two playfield glasses shatter in Dad's hands. Either static, or the temperature change from cold to hot (his hands).

So if the ball "was" to break the glass, your son would be spending hours cleaning the fragments from the playfield.
